    1964 Documentary footnote…

    For any of you guys who posted on this subject:

    Just noticed this, after printing up some images from the ‘Soldier In The Sun’ documentary. The fellow looking out of the Belvedere looking quite serious, and holding the Bren gun is my father. Who is 90 and counting………

    Summer of ’64, Aden …… happy days (for a child at least).

    Now I have the photo with the famous BBC logo in the top left hand corner, I’ll frame it and present it to him. Though the Belvedere was not his favourite ‘aircraft’, he felt its safety record was second to many.

    The Ted Gordon & Vince Gavin story….

    Well,

    As Julie mentioned, last Thursday I took dad to meet Julie, her husband and 2 sisters & we had a rare old time, just a pity of course that we were ten or so months too late, for Ted & Vince to have met for the first time in 46 years.

    That, unfortunately – is life.

    It was a great afternoon, my father loved it, the sight of Julie sitting next to this 87 year old former buddy of her father – sharing photographs and stories is something I will remember for a long time. So will dad / Vince Senior (I hope…)

    Julie, thanks for the photos you emailed, I’ve printed them & sent them to dad.

    Hello Julie,

    Thanks your reply. Just in, and late, will have a look at the your email tomorrow – and reply. I’ve already sent dad (yesterday) your original post on this thread – by mail, he was pleased that we’ve managed to connect – but very, very sad that Ted has left us.

    After we were in Aden, until ’65 – dad was in Norfolk for a year or so, and finished his RAF career “Down the hole” – radar stuff, at Patrington in East Yorkshire. He left the service in December 1967, 26 years to the date that he started – on his birthday in 1941. He lives in Hull, so not so far from you, by the sound of things.

    Sad these two old boys – who will have had so much in common, never got together. perhaps one day…………..

    I’ll be in touch shortly.

    (Wait until you hear about the adventure I mentioned….)

    Hello Julie,

    I was very sorry to hear about the death of your father, 6 years ago I actually found quite a bit of information about Ted, and spoke with a test pilot from the original Concorde, who knew and worked with him. Sadly I never located your dad, and then went off to work in Libya …..

    Your father worked for Court Line in the 70’s, but the airline folded (I believe) when our Arab friends quadrupled the price of oil.

    Dad last saw him in Aden in about 1964, when my father was based at RAF Khormaksar, on Belvederes, and your father was a test pilot with Handley Page. They also served together in the Berlin Airlift. I went with Dad in 1999 to Berlin for the 50th anniversary, it was a great week.

    As a result of looking for Ted, my father and I had a wonderful adventure, though I’d better not put the details on a public forum. You’re right about that old email address, it expired some years ago. When you get the chance, please email me on: [email]bullharrigan@yahoo.co.uk[/email]
