You got any pictures of the process at either end Wokka Bob ?
Try the Air Britian site. Has 1 picture at Bentley Priory.

Unfortunately not. There may be some out there somewhere, IIRC we were a team of 8.
The job started at the end of September with a planned finish for end of October. The aircraft was lifted into position on 25th Oct.
Excuses:
1. The ‘Management’ was packing boxes ready for our move to Fat Alberts at the beginning of November and I seem to recollect my box brownie was first to go.
2. To be quite honest, I didnât think about it until after the event. As a young SNCO it was a case of get the job done and watch Binbrook in your rearview mirror for the last time!:diablo:
Bob
Lightning wing rebuild.
I was pleased to see her wings are able to be disassembled without resorting to saws as well.
Having stripped XM 173 at Binbrook in a warm hangar in 1976 and taken it to Bentley Priory for rebuild, this is not the job for the faint hearted. Apparently we were the first team to complete the task. (Unless you know different!) On an uphill slop at the back of the Officers Mess; with the road slopping inwards to a drainage channel, it was not easy to mate those wings. A number of MT trolley jacks borrowed from Uxbridge allowed us to reassemble the wings. Oh by the way the rain was persistent and this was late October and outside.:)
If you have seen the London Gazette site, you will have seen your uncles Service Number (142249). You will note that the L.G. was published on 8th June 1945 with the Supplement dated 14 June 1945.
With that information and at a cost of at least ÂŁ30 you can go to the Ministry of Defence website (veterans) and obtain a copy of his Military Service Record of where he had been.
Veteransâ site is at: http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/Ab…erviceRecords/
You may wish to read this other recent thread: http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?t=114782
Hope this is of some help.

Legislation and Records
Slight thread creep warning.
A recent thread here looked at ABH and the TNA as well as museums and how they are reacting to requests.
May be of interest to those looking for an answer – or not
I obtained my uncles service record some 9 years ago and as Moggy says you have to have consent or be NoK. It is just a colour photocopy of both sides of F543 Record of Service. (Donât know about the [A])
My uncle was lost without trace 12 Feb 1942 whilst flying in Hampdens of 49Sqn. I got a full copy.
Unfortunately with recent changes to legislation you may find a great deal blanked out! If you are not from a service background, be ready for a mass of abbreviations. It will also cost you ÂŁ30 @ 2011 prices.

Apparently it was offered to NAM earlier this week for ÂŁ15k minus engine!
Just one engine or both Gnomes missing:D
Bob
Absolutely cracking shots.
My favouite is the b/w shot of the junglie #9 in your first post.
Was the reversal of the negative intentional. đ Evocative atmosphere.
The Legislation?
The following is a minefield that is open to the widest interpretation.:(
The Information Commissionerâs Office (ICO) http://www.ico.gov.uk/ has numerous rulings that make a mere mortal quiver. The 100 year exemption rule on personal data is being liberally applied. I had noticed last year that Family History groups were also up in arms and e-petitioning the ICO and MPâs as they were being thwarted on records that had been open for decades.
The following legislation appears to be the brickwall, along with the litigation culture no doubt.
The Data Protection Act 1998
http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1998/29/contents
Freedom of Information Act 2000
Environmental Information Regulations 2004
The exemption for personal information (Guide)
http://www.ico.gov.uk/%7E/media/documents/library/Freedom_of_Information/Detailed_specialist_guides/PERSONAL_INFORMATION.ashx
Issued today 30 Jan 2012, a new (plain english!) guide to the Freedom of information act.

I almost lost the will to live!
A very poor quality photo from Grantley Adams 1977.

Think before you post
Thank you all for your discussion points.
There are the majority of forumites who are polite, courteous, and respect their fellow man. As encapsulated in the above replies many of our fellows wish to inform and direct. Lack of commaâs, reflect a changing world. We should embrace, inform on the past and get a life.
It is those of short tempers and lack of empathy that annoys me. I have seen the concern for a 16 yr old who is struggling with the forum. Personally, having being taught by my grandchildren, I would have thought that this age group could run rings about us oldies.
Next comes a considered request without the full information that the requester has. How sensible to get an unbiased reply, only to be lambasted by one and all including people that control this site. Not a good advert.
I do fervently believe we should revert to our Victorian ancestors values, no matter how invisible or anonymous we are, we should be respectful, honest and sympathetic to our fellow man, no matter their background. This will only generate a caring and thoroughly informative forum.
Surely this is what we all want.
Bob:)

Physically & Mentally wounded need our help
Unfortunately Andy, you like many of us are too close to the subject. I have a Grandson and a close friends Grandson who are Afghan vets!
Having been through many conflicts myself, Falklands included, the wounded are statistics that are not popular politics. We are lucky that a certain Welsh Guard (Mr Weston) has become a national hero for raising awareness as well as oodles of cash. Yes more servicemen from the Falklands conflict have taken their own lives than those that perished in combat. A sobering thought.
Until recent conflicts, the term Post Combat Stress Disorder had no meaning. WWI saw personnel shot for deserting their posts. Cowards or suffering from PCSD? The jury is out!
âHelp for Heroesâ are a wonderful brigade of people. Perhaps we should be asking why do they exist? Should not the country be tending to the wounded?
I believe we should be re-building Military hospitals with all the facilities including accommodation for the families and friends. The abuse given to those early victims (wounded) at public swimming pools should make us all ashamed.
Unlike the USA, I cannot remember any politician of any party paying homage to our dead and wounded on their return from recent conflicts.
To your original post, yes they are forgotten and only a statistic. What concerns me are those who are left mentally wounded. What is going to happen to them? Too little, too late. More homeless, innocents into criminals.
No, I donât have the answer, but many well-meaning Charities are trying to help.
