Best Method of air-to-air refueling
I’m actually an air refueling instructor pilot in the USAF, I’ll be glad to explain or answer any questions about it. I’m only familiar with “boom” refueling…flying heavies C-141/C-17. As “KC-135 Boomer” explains the boom method is much faster, so some of you thinking that the probe and drogue may be better because you could get 2 or 3 jets on the “boom” simultaneously are misguided because in reality those 3 on 1 pictures are only for airshows and the press. By using the boom you could refuel more jets in a shorter period of time, despite the fact that its one at a time.
As far as what method is more dificult from a reciever point of view, all I can say is AR is very demanding, your flying a very precise close formation..for up to 30 minutes or more. Nightime adds that much more difficulty. Also many people are under the false impression that once your “hooked up” the boom drags you around and your just hanging on. In reality the boom is designed to disconnect under certain conditions, so your flying at 300plus knots and you have to keep your jet in a small 12 foot box of airspace, if you exceed any of these limits you get disconnected.
Dazdaman,
One often reads about how far advanced the Germans were regarding their aircraft technology, and no doubt they were far ahead in some areas, but alot of the push to develope these breakthroughs was initiated by desperation and the quest to find a “silver bullet” in order to turn the tide of the war. The Germans lacked quality research into other areas that the Allies excelled in, notably advanced radar systems. Also the British were relatively on parity with the Germans in regards to jet aircraft, It seemed that they did not emphisize it as much because at that point in the war they were winning and were’nt as desperate. The US P-80 shooting Star was flying by 1945 and would have given the Germans a run. BUT THE BIG PICTURE that many forget is that WE HAD NUKES!!!!!!!!Germany was nowhere near the US in this technology and it really renders the debate MOOT!!!!

PhantomII,
UPS operates a fleet of approx 250 jets, comprised of 727’s, 747’s, 767’s, 757’s, DC-8’s, A-300’s and MD-11’s
The 727 does have the Tay engines as do all the UPS 727’s. They are also equipped with a glass cockpit and HUD’s. very nice cockpit for a 727!

Steve,
Although its part of the Smithsonian, did you ever visit the Paul Garber facility? The Garber facility is located in Silver Springs Maryland, (Close to DC) and is where the VAST majority of the aircraft that are owned by the Smithsonian are stored. Also its the place where restorations are done. I was thewre in 1991, and it was way better than any regular museum because you get a guided tour by volunteers who are mostly ex mil guys who flew alot of these aircraft. You need to call now to book a reservation for the tour, and its free. The great part about this tour is that the facility is a complex of small warehouse type bulidings, that give one no hint of whats inside. Our guide turned out to be an old Hellcat pilot, who was very knowledgable. When He found out we were a bunch of Air Force pilots, he grabbed us and took us out to this old buliding, fished a key out of his pocket and slowly opened the door, and said, ” I’m sure a few Air Force guys would know whats in here!” It was the fuselage of the Enola Gay and about 40 old fighters and others aircraft. Some were in restored condition and awaiting their turn to be displayed at the Main Museum, and others looked like the day they were towed off the flightline. The best part was since He trusted us, (being Pilots and all) He let us walk about and sit in all the planes. Their were some interesting German stuff there an ME163, and Arado Blitz.
I can’t be sure what the current situation with the Garber facility is now, since the New Hugazy Center is suppossed to become the main complex/restoration facility, so Please call and ask! Sorry to go on for so long but it was one of the coolest days of my life!!!! good luck!
No offence but why would any nation buy a Rafale instead of an F-15 which is by far a superior product, combat tested and still undefeated!!!!!!!!!
I read in the current issue of Airliners magazine that there were a couple of 727’s and a 747SP as well as some Russian transports and incredibly, a scottish twin pioneer that were left engin-less on the ramp at Bahgdad Int. These were left there sans engines in the beginning of March before hostilitities began. Evidently servicable aircraft were flown to Syria or Iran…..another example of Time magazine screwing up,
PS You would have to have huge balls to take out an airliner as a private in the army without consent from higher ups!!! a totally unbelieveable story.

Almost every answer in your replies degenerates into some type of anti-US diatribe…..franky its getting old and worn out. Your probably some left wing loser type, that has pictures of Mao and Che Gueverra hanging up in your house, like the ones you had in your college dorm…Its futile………keep dreaming that the US fails in all its endevours and I will pray that New Zealand or PRC or some other nation will step up on to the world stage and lead us to perpetual peace and brotherhood!!! Not Likely!!!

Hand 87-5,
While I would have gladly let those Taliban types drown in the Atlantic, I didn’t say it was the right thing to do. Personally I have a few friends who were killed on 9-11 and I’ve found I have little to no sympathy for any of these people….Also, I am tired of having to fly to Gitmo/Saudi/Kuwait/and now Bahgdad…after 13 years of this BS its starting to get old, I have a very tainted impression of this part of the world..I know I should be more enlightened, but at times I feel they are all beyond hope, It seems they enjoy war and could care less about peace. Its just not aimed at the US either, look at how the Iraqi’s and Iranians fought, as well as the civil war in Lebanon, Arab/Israel…the list is endlesss!!!
Back to the other thread…Listen to track 1 and 2 of the first linkin Park CD (its the red one) and the new one just came out in June, almost as good!!!

The US an evil empire??? I know some people on this forum have alluded to you being a Communist, If this is true I wonder how anybody with a brain can find that political system worthy of envy? And don’t kid yourself, one day NZ may have a situation where you will need to defend yourself and you won’t be able to, then you will do what all small children and women do, run to Daddy when the chips are down and the going gets tough!!!just be glad the Austrailians will help you.
The delivery of the korans was symbolic of the US trying to give these vermin some rights. Personally I would have gladly opened my cargo door in flight over the Atlantic and thrown every last one out, and I would sleep well at night.
I wonder what your solution would be GarryB? Should we just let them go so they could join up with their compatriots and plan more terrorism against the US? I bet you would secretly get a kick out of that!! You truly are a sad person with lots of chips on your shoulder…By the way what nation in your eyes can be considered a paragon of virtue? I’d be interested in your answer.

Your posts are meandering dribble, that seeths with your viscios anti-America BS!!! Now listen to someone who has been to Gitmo 6 times over the past 2 years, my squadron is tasked with re-supply runs to keep those vermin alive.
My first trip was in Jan 2002, We flew the approach and as soon as we landed we were swamped by CNN and other news types!! the first person on the jet asks me “Where are the Quorans? (Sp)”
They apparently were a high priority item, and they retrieved them quickly and left!! Now If we were treating them so horribly, why would we give a crap about their religious materials?? I can tell you its not a country club, but its also not a Gulag!!! Matter of fact last time I was there it was 85 and sunny with a light breeze!!
The base itself was leased perpetually, After Castro took over there was some discussions about giving it back, but shortly thereafter Castro began to show his true colors, so we kept it! If Castro didn’t like the situation he would have to take the base militarily, which would be all the excuse we needed to attck Cuba…So a stalemate has existed for 40 years.
By the way after 9/11 Castro has opened up a 4 mile approach zone to the runway…Before it was only a half mile final and was quite tricky to fly in a large aircraft. Many have crashed. So even Castro has helped us out.
Isn’t New Zealand that country with the woman prime minister who has dis-banded your entire Air Force!!!! I sure hope nothing ever happens to you, of course you can talk big, knowing the Aussies will save your bacon!!!!! Hell you can take over the whole country with 2 Cessna’s and a box of grenades!!!!!
