The intent of my post was to show some of the hipocracy of many of the arguments on this thread. Essentially many Europeans look upon the US as a backward, lawless nation filled with gun-toting kooks who eat McDonalds every day…..Yet You enlightened Europeans have caused so much more misery in the world than any of us gun-toting Americans can ever imagine. It may be hard for the average European to understand the average Americans belief in individual freedom, as opposed to the common well-being of all, that Europeans seem to embrace, Hence This argument will go nowhere. Just understand this, I don’t own a gun, nor do I hunt, and I’d probably feel bad about killing an animal, but I would fight for my neighbors right to do all of those activities.
For historical purposes, I believe over 400,000 Americans were killed in our Civil War, much more than in any other war since.
    Take care,

I get a kick from many of you “shocked” Europeans preaching about how “neanthedal” and backwards American culture and Gun ownership is. I dare challenge my “outraged” European neighbors, who are so happy to be separated from the US by the Atlantic ocean, to add up all the murders in the United States due to guns from our founding in 1776 till today. Then compare that number with the waterfall of horrors inflicted upon all corners of the world since 1776 by my esteemed European breatheren, who seem to live on a higher cultural plane, and have attained such a high degree of enlightenment and sophistication that we dumb Americans can never hope to attain!
Lets start with all the horrors of colonialism, of which the mess today in the Middle East is a direct result of
    Napoleanic Wars
Numerous other wars of the 19th century
    World War One…Milliond dead
World War Two …Many more millions dead
The Holocaust…^ million Jews incinerated and gassed, Very Civilized!
And lets not forget the Great European derived philosophy called Communism, which has enslaved millions and killed many more millions…The list goes on and on!!

Now lets hear your smug replies to my friend Pluto.
One other aspect about the whole gun ownership debate, is there are literally millions of guns in the US, It is very naive to believe that if the US banned gun ownership today, that the “bad guys” would turn them in, and there would be no more gun violence….its a very left-wing way of looking at the issue, idealistic but of no practical consequence…the guns will still be around and the bad guys will always get them!! sad but true,
And just remember, with all these Americans toting guns and taking target practice, it should make you all feel that much safer, since our boys will probably have to cross that Ocean your so glad exists and bail you out again from the next mess you start!!! Maybe if the French owned Guns the Nazi’s wouldn’t have had such a walk in the park as they entered Paris in 1940 as well as all those other European capitals that we liberated…
PS Michael Moore is a liar, with an agenda
I enjoy debate, but some of you haven’t a clue and preach from a high perch,
The US isn’t perfect, but when you guys were running the show all hell was breaking loose every decade or so…………The world owes Europe a tremendous debt, but You have many more warts than America can ever earn !

Ok guys here are the numbers for aircraft produced each year
    1942 1943 1944 1945
    UK 23,600 26,262 26,461 12,070
    US 47,836 85,898 96,318 46,001
    USSR 25,436 34,900 40,300 20,900
    Germany 15,409 24,807 40,593 7,540
    Japan 5,008 16,693 28,180 8,263

Now you can see what a huge difference the Allies had over Germany, and the huge amount of aircraft the US was producing compared to everyone else.

Heres one number I just found, At the end of 1944 the Famous B-24 plant at Willow Run michigan was producing a B-24 bomber every 63 minutes!!!!! and there were 5 other plants in the US building B-24 Bombers……This gives you an idea of the power of US industry….and how the Germans could have never competed or won! You forget the US was fighting the Japanese at the same time!!! Imagine how many fighters we could have built if we needed if we were completeing an entire B-24 every 63 minutes in one factory!!

Take a look at the industrail output of the US vs Germany towards the 1944/45 timeframe. First of all the US was untouchable as far as German attacks, second the US and Britain were destroying German Industry every day from 1943 on….I can’t quote exact numbers but the US in one month produced 44,000 aircraft in one month!!
Just read a book about high-tech versus low-tech weaponry..a chapter was about the Me-262 and how advanced they were, but the German pilots stated that everytime they flew it there was a 15 to one fight against Mustangs, they admitted that there was no way they could shoot down that many each day, and by 1946 they would have been facing P-80’s in the same ratios…all the while B-29s would have been reducing Germany to an Atomic wasteland…
Cheguvera, the German effort to develope an Atomic weapon was unsucessful, not because they attacked Russia, it was mostly due to them going down the wrong road as far as using Heavy water..also another reason was many Jewish scientists fled nazi Germany and ended up helping the Allies develope the A-Bomb….
By the end of WWII the US Navy had over 100 aircraft carriers in the Pacific fighting 2 or 3 Japanese carriers…the numbers were totally overwhelming on all fronts by 1945! I’ll try to get some accurate numbers for you.

I remember reading that part of the reason that Singapore sold their A-340’s for 777’s was the slow climb rate, which in the Pacifac with large T-storms etc was causing alot of delays and rerouting
I find it hard to believe that the 343 is cheaper to fly then the 777 and that the 777 is only a few % points cheaper than the Mad Dog 11, but I trust you guys, Thanks

    Cheguvera,

Your really stretching it! If you get a chance read a book called “The making of the Atomic Bomb” by Richard Rhodes, It is a fascinating and very interesting book…The Germans were activley trying to develope an Atomic weapon, they just were looking in the wrong places scientifically….Undoubtably if Hitler hadn’t invaded Russia the war would have lasted longer but the Allies would have still won…….By 1946 it would have been B-29’s leveling Germany, and Meteors and P-80’s vs Me 262’s either way the Germans could not defeat US production….in my opinion.

Does anybody know the economics of the 777 vs the A-340? I remember reading a few years back about Singapore trading in their 340’s for 777’s and them citing very strong reasons for doing so…like the 340’s couldn’t climb to altitude fast enough for thier operations, just curious…..

    Cheguvera,

Undoubtably the Russians delivered the massive blow to the Germans, and consequently suffered and inflicted,by far, the largest amount of casualties. However The writer fails to take into account American industrail production. Unhindered by bombings, American industrail might would have defeated the Germand easily, Hell, in one month we were producing thousands of planes!!!and everyone seems to forget one VITAL FACT>>>>BY AUGUST 1945 GERMANY WOULD HAVE BECOME AN ATOMIC PARKING LOT!!!!!!!!!!! b-29’s and Mustangs would have been roaming free all over the skies……….Lancasters would have been dropping A-bombs as well!!!!!

Before you get too excited, try reading a history book or two and take a look at Germany, Japan, Italy, Western Europe, and South Korea…Now compare those countries with the Former Eastern Bloc…and North Korea…and then you can spout off about what a rotten nation The US is!!!!
Go ask the citizens of these nations how horrible life has been since the US has played a part in their rebuilding/occupation?
I just saw the movie Shrek today with my kids, it is amazing what we can do with technology, Americans have been to the moon, made life better for the entire world, and your ilk sit around and try to figure out how to bomb and kill innocents on trains or in offices!!! please give me, and the rest of the world a break!!!

    Arthur,

From an American perspective, there are very few areas where the government does a good job. There are far more areas where the government does an inefficient, wasteful, and inferior job. The less government the better! A population or nation who rely on the government for their well-being is a stagnant, listless, and uninspired people.
    Take care,
