Yes spoke to someone years ago who went to Chile with the Canberra’s. After the war Hunters and Canberras transfered to the Chilean Air Force.

Wasn’t one of the Hunter’s Mike McEvoy’s ( Mr Tailpiece from SAM ) during his RAF days ?

    LOX (Liquid Oxygen) tank removal?

I seem to recall from RAF rigger training LOX tanks tended to be spherical..would make sense to want to get them away from a stricken aircraft in a hurry.

    Just a thought..

maybe why they are nagging at me as I was LOX qualified…….

‘Our’ crash kit only contained things like aircraft safety pins, ground locks etc. The bigger stuff outside then had drag off slings, catapillar trolleys etc

This is nagging me, as I’ve a feeling I’ve seen something like them before.

Personally, I can’t see how they coud be used with tanks or missiles – the fins would get in the way.

What diameter are the rings ?

The Tornados went in against the most highly defended sites the Iraqi’s had – losses were inevitable, if in some cases, avoidable.

The Tornado was, and possibly still is, the best low level interdictor in the world. It’ll get you in, under the radar, low and fast, but once over a large flat airfield, a simple SAM has enough time to get lock and do its job.

How many Jags did we loose BTW ? 😉

…… which makes the original case a bit iffy

    24 GP cars @ 800 hp = 19,200 hp

Of couse if the Vulcan was going a bit faster………

OK – recalculated above using 20,000 lb / engine

makes it a bit closer !

Bit of research gives a formula:

    Pa = Ta V / 325, where –

Pa = Propulsive Power available in Horse Power, Ta = Thrust available in Pounds, and V = Velocity in Knots.

If the Vulcan is doing 250 kts, each engine is producing 15,385 Horse power 😀

Not sure anyone can say whether the pilot ‘attempted ejection’

The wording of the CO was, I think, noteworthy – he said the pilot ‘was ejected’

    Lets wait and see.

Either way, a real tragedy, and one that will have deeply shocked anyone in the vicinity.
