Common with R/C models – again normally using a dolly for take off.
There was a piece recently in the Daily Mail’s questions & answers bit. From what I recall Mr Edgley himself responded saying that he still has all the info and if anyone wants to restart production………………….
Doesn’t Cosford have a single seater?
I wonder what happened to the bits and bobs at Halton in the 80’s when I went through. There was certainly a canopy, and other bits that I can’t recall ( brake unit? )
You can’t burn real aircraft nowdays as in days gone by – Health and Safety, environmental protection etc etc……….
I agree that Topcliffe does look very similar except for the reserviors. Now, if the farmer has poly tunnels in that brown field at 2 o’clock I’d say it’s a good match – that field is the right shape and size……………………
Sorry guys – magical mystery tour of Norweigian hotels, coupled with my refusal to continue paying £10 a night for internet access means I’ve been off for a couple of days.
Crail – too near the sea. I was looking out of the port side and down at an angle. I would have seen it.
Coningsby/Leuchars – 22 yrs in the RAF – Nope, not those
Arbroath – the runways arn’t the correct layout – tht one is too ‘off to one side’
Errol – not intact enough. The airfield looked in very good condition, and totally intact
As I said, not long after clearing high ground, not near urban connerbation, rectangular ( very regular shape – not trees ) reservoirs just outside boundary, intact, classic intersecting 3 runway layout, main runway looked lengthened.
Anyone got a link to 1944 list of airbases? There was a paperback book, but mine’s in the UK!
I have tried, slowly, going through the airfield list posted the other day as well as google earth, but thought it may ring bells with someone out there.
The reservoirs were 2 rectangles, narrow ends towards the airfield and close together. Not huge, I’d say 1/4 main runway length, maybe a bit less. Situated fairly close to the airfield, certainly within a runway length.
I couldn’t see the coast from my side.
We had not long finished flying over hilly/mountainous terrain
Not Leconfield – no reservoir visible.
Too far into the flight for Scampton
We were at around 25000, as I said around 40 mins into a 1 hour flight. My guess is Northern England / Southern Scotland somewhere. All 3 runways appeared intact, and dark in colour. No HAS’s, no aircraft or vehicles on the runways. Assuming we would be heading NNE, the reservoirs would be to the East of the airfield, and the main runway probably East-West with the camp site to the North.
Now I am confused! Exeter was in a dry dock on the Navy days ’82 – she was very distinctive because of her blue bottom. The one with the ‘kills’ must have been Cardiff ( afloat ) – but the above list only gives one claim for her – why the extra kills on the launcher?
I remember going to Navy Days 1982 in Portsmouth. Several type 42’s had ‘kill’ markings on their Sea Dart launchers. The most I remember on any ship was 2 or 3, in black and red – and it wasn’t Exeter. If I can find they scrapbook…….
Interesting day – also had the Argentine Puma there
So, lets see. The UK can now offload Typhoon to the Saudis, and possibly the Aussies as well – looks like the cutbacks to the 232 on order may be possible after all……………
Very interesting if a little out of date. Shame they overlooked some, like my loal – Ludham, Norfolk
