    Ok.

    1 CVN (48 F18’s, lets say half a dozen of each S-3 and E-6B, 12 choppers and 4 E2C)
2 Tico Cruisers with up to up to 122 SM2ER’s each, or a combination of those and the up to 488 ESSM’s they can carry each. Plus a pair of Sea Hawk ASW Choppers
2 Burke Class with up to 96 SM2 or 384 ESSM (or a combination of each), two ASW birds.
2 subs of either Las Angeles or Virginia class.

    CVN > Kutzenov
    2 x Tico > Kirov
    2 x Burke > 4x Russian Destroyers
    2 x Virginia > Oscar & Akula

Ur comparing a sluggish aircraft like F-18 with Su-33. Su-33 can do the job in air to air role. Air wing can also be increased. Just there is no need for it.The rest of the job is for Antiship missiles.

Interesting. I’ve yet to see anything as agile as the EF, in acceleration, constant high G turns etc… and I’ve seen a F-22. My view is the su-x series looks sluggish, not agile, but highly maneuverable.

Why people at Sukhoi so biased against EF that they dont consider it as worthy competitor. And these have huge access to data from engine manufacturers and actual design teams.

Pavel Solov’ev said, in particular of materials, of our knowledge in the area of aerodynamics and of our understanding of integration. You see, the fighter’s engine is supposed to be integrated deeply into the fighter’s structure itself, is supposed to participate in the fulfillment of the combat mission, provide super-maneuverability, stability, reliability, etc. Right now I have absolutely no doubts that will make a fifth generation engine, or “5+” as they are calling it already.
As you know yourself, a huge flow of information reaches me, not only from open press, but also from secret sources, which we have – thank God they are operating successfully. Therefore, we are well acquainted with the actual developments which are being carried out abroad. Trust me, we have found non-standard symmetric or asymmetric answers for these solutions – our airplane and engine will be somewhat better than those that they are developing in the U.S. and Western Europe.

Star: Mate those articles aren’t exactly right, I have friends over in Brazil that are telling me things way different to what is in those pieces of news you quoted. If Brazil is still so poor, why is Russia so keen to tap the Brazilian market? Truth is, Brazil does indeed have a very strong ecconomic stand point these days- due mainly to the up turn in copper trade and also the recent Tropical unrest here in Australia that wiped out our Banana crops which Brazil was able to capitalise on.

I never said Brazil is poor. But Brazil simply poor for the kind of money required for operating Aircraft carrier with all 4+ fighters or SSN/SSBN. The cost of fighterwing of 30 to 40 aircraft alone cost $10B. How much 24 F-18E cost Aust?. And that was 2006. I doubt Boeing will sign for the price again. They raised price to $70m for USN. Russia is tapping every market to diversify economy. They have long passed that stage of selling only arms.

    S-300 booked untill 2014.

Russia ships eight S-300 air defense systems to China in 2008

ATHENS. Oct 13 (Interfax-AVN) – Russia’s Almaz-Antei concern delivered eight S-300 air defense missile systems to China in 2008, the concern’s Deputy General Director Mikhail Novikov said.

S-300 systems for other foreign customers, which will be delivered in 2009 – 2013, are now being produced, he said.

“The stock of order for the next five years is in fact full. The same thing applies to Buk air defense missile complexes,” Novikov told journalists within the framework of the Defendory 2008 arms show in Athens.

The concern sells weapons to about ten countries, he said. “There are many more orders, including from Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East,” he added.

Rosoboronexport satisfied with Russian performance at Defendory 2008 show

ATHENS. Oct 13 (Interfax-AVN) – Rosoboronexport is satisfied with the Russian performance at the Defendory International 2008 show that ended in Athens on Saturday.

“The exhibition was successful by every meaure,” Rosoboronexport Director Nikolai Dimidyuk told the media in Athens. He led the Russian delegation to the show.

“We can say we have displayed the right products and have chosen the right priorities in the light of weaponry required by particular prospective buyers,” he said.

“Certainly, everyone was amazed with the Iskander-E tactical missile system, which has high precision, immunity to air defense, pre-strike mobility and stealth and other outstanding capabilities,” he said.

“The Buk-M2E multi-channel anti-aircraft missile system provoked large interest. The system is used against strategic and tactical aircraft, cruise missiles, helicopters and other airborne vehicles,” he said.

“There is genuine interest in the modernized armored personnel carrier BMP-3M,” Dimidyuk said.

“Much has been done for joint ventures that service and offer post-warranty maintenance of exported armaments and military hardware,” he said.

Can’t afford, or is it that they have different economic priorities? They’re using the more economically sound method to achieve their goals.

    Surely more economically sound:)

The fact that Israel did the hard part will take the sting out of it. 😉

Chinese has alot of money to pour into single projects. British/German combined cannot afford to send men into space. Galileo needs lift services from Russia.

Errrrr. What? What Saturn engine or Al-41? J-10 uses Al-31!

AL-31FN is modernized AL-31F with extended life and safety features for single engine aircraft. it used technolgies of AL-41. It was designed first by Saturn and manufactured by Salut. U wont see many more J-10s than the number of engine supplied.

Medvedev orders Defense Ministry to work out program of building aircraft carriers

SEVEROMORSK. Oct 13 (Interfax-AVN) – Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has instructed the Defense Ministry to work out a program of building aircraft carriers in order to begin their construction in the next two years.

“I think that we will soon prepare the program. Consider it as an order to the Defense Ministry to revive aircraft carrying elements [of the Russian Navy] and to decide on places where new aircraft carriers will be built,” Medvedev told a meeting with the staff of Russia’s only heavy aircraft carrier Admiral Ushakov aboard of which he watched a training of Northern Fleet forces On October 11.

Medvedev expressed hope that “we will soon approach the first decisions, while the building of the ships will be begin in the next one or two years.”

“We will have to build new aircraft carriers. This is a very important area of developing the Navy,” the president said, adding that “this is the way all large states that have a powerful navy develop.”

Pointing out that an aircraft carrier is built about five years on average, Medvedev said that “we will reach the first results by 2013 – 2015, if we count from the moment the decision was made.”

The president also said that “if we do, we should do many things in a different manner,” adding that “Power units should be nuclear. This gives other opportunities. Electronic equipment and arms should also change.”

The president stressed that “this cannot be done in just one year, because some are not ready for this.”

“We lost a lot in the 1990-s and did not build anything. We should restore the base of creating aircraft carriers and in fact the whole Navy,” Medvedev said.

New submarines are being built, he said. New nuclear-powered submarines – the Yury Dolgoruky and the Alexander Nevsky – will soon be launched. “The Yury Dolgoruky will be launched next year. Sea trials are underway,” he said.

And aircraft carriers should be built along with submarines, because “the submarine fleet cannot fulfill the tasks that it should do given that we are a large country and we should protect all its borders,” the president said.

“The sooner we decide on the place of building [new aircraft carriers] the sooner we will begin to build them,” Medvedev said. “The money issue is not that important for us despite certain crises on the global financial market as the issue where to build. The country became smaller after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the number of places where to build went down,” he said

I am comparing a stable Mig-29 vs the relatively unstable F-16 that has an engine compromised between performance and endurance yet still is reportedly superior to the Mig-29 above the low speed regime. If the F-16s engines were tuned to deliever 400 hours of thrust – imagine how much extra juice they would pump out.

It is lack of investment in Soviet manufacturing and IT that led to such end products. Nothing do to with design of aircraft. The same MIG-35 can carry 50% more fuel of MIG-29 but still weigh the same with 6500kg weopon load and Mach 2.25 speed which F-16 cannot reach.

They are the system integrators. That is what counts.. F-35 is also not entirely American but who would call it a British aircraft?

F-35 has US engine and design from beginning with some avinoic help from BAE. while J-10 born from Lavi mixed with MIG-1.42 effort with Saturn engine. Remember MIG originally was with AL-41. At the end up look like EF.

… telling Germans and Brits that Chinese can do things equally well… Ehmm.. not a good idea 🙂

Chinese are not alone in J-10 effort just like L-15 and one another Piston engine Yak.

Brazil has plenty of money nowadays. Converted at exchange rates (which is what counts for imports) the same GDP as Russia or Canada, just ahead of India, more than S. Korea or Australia, & running a fat trade surplus & (until this year) respectable balance of payments surplus. No foreign debt – Brazil has just become a net creditor – times change.

Brazil does not have the Tax base to support military expansion and it will further decrease after commodity drop. Simple income base of population is not there.

ah, Star, to discuss with you is always fun 🙂

I was saying because a pair of fighters look similar, does not mean in any way they have similar performance, as you claimed the J-10 a perfect aerodynamic copy of the EF.

In no way am I challanging sukhoi’s statements, although at times they do make you think seriously about them. Remember when sukhoi was exclaiming mig-31 and su-35 were comparable to only the F-22 and PAK-FA.

It is more likely than not they have similar performance. Just reduce the weight of MIG-25 with modern manufacturing. enhanced the engine. performance will be pretty similar despite a decade old design. J-10 is quite similar to EF.

    @star – grow up.

@doomlordis – “It has a lower wing loading , better thrust to weight ratio” – those are pretty irrelavent – as you dont know what the lift/weight*drag ratio is. Nor do you know the actual TWR at alts and speeds – let alone the T-W*D ratio.

Just because of the sensation that was created over the 90s low and slow Su-XX airshow routines – doesnt mean the F-15 doesn’t out maneuver it at relavent combat speeds – they are probably quite evenly matched. See the Mig 29 vs F-16 examples over Germany. Everyone seems to base the Su-XXs outstanding maneuverability on its airshow displays – this is pretty foolish as many have claimed – yet so many people still talk about it.

Essential agility now occurs at supersonic speeds and high altitude. There is a real performance gap between legacy designs and new models like the EF. So significant it will definitely shrink the NEZ of enemy weapons – and therefore relatively – increase your own weapons NEZ. This is the area that systems engineering/avionics can only do so much to bridge – it’s where raw performance is coming back and is becoming relavent. It is a bit like when the first afterburning jets started hitting the scene after the earlier gen jets. There is a substantial performance gap – try watch videos of jets at 40 000+ foot and see how relatively sluggish they become to what you see at an airshow.

so ur comparing non-fbw MIG-29 with 400 hr engine life with 4000hr engine life F-16. Remember engines loses thrust due to wear and tear. only 60 to 70% of thrust is available in real life.

Star, honestly, I still dont see how you can make statements such as the J-10 is a EF clone. The F15 and Mig-25 have a similar layout, must be equal then

First MIG-25 and F-15 are not of same generation. F-15 is a decade later design. where BVR is not alone criteria. J-10 and EF are of the same generation and time frame. Second J-10 has extensive external help in early 90s.

Actually cba with replying to the “There is no way EF matches Su-27SM/Su-35 performance” No one gets anywhere

Sukhoi has been attending nearly every airshow in past two decades now. They exactly know where EF/Gripen/Rafale lies. They dont even consider it MIG-35 competitors. so it takes alot to challenge Sukhoi statements.
