China’s FC-1 fighter advances as Chengdu seeks buyers

    ——————————————————————————–

    Flight International 09 Nov 2004

Joint design on track for 2005 delivery to Pakistan, but J-10 remains elusive

Chengdu Aircraft is on schedule to deliver the first FC-1/Super-7 light fighter to the Pakistani air force next year, having already racked up over 300 flight test hours on three prototype aircraft.

Pakistan is the only country to have placed an order for the FC-1, having agreed to take 16 aircraft equipped with Chinese radars. Eight of these will be assembled by Chengdu and eight by the Pakistani Aeronautical Complex (PAC). Pakistan has an ultimate requirement for about 150 of the aircraft, which is also being evaluated by China and Egypt. Chengdu expects a market for at least 300 FC-1s and a joint Chengdu-PAC sales team plans to accelerate an export campaign after first delivery in the third quarter of 2005.

China also requires hundreds of new lightweight fighters but has several other options.

“This is a light aircraft, so there are many competitors,” says Le Qiang, vice-director of Chengdu’s trade department. One option is to revive the Chengdu F-7MF programme, a 100% Chinese effort the government launched as an alternative to the joint Sino-Pakistani FC-1. Chengdu test flew the F-7MF in 2002, but the aircraft has since been parked. Chengdu continues to make improvements to the aircraft and is lobbying the government to fund more flight tests.

The FC-1 and F-7MF offer a leap in capability over the existing Chengdu F-7MG because they can accommodate more weapon systems and support four engagements simultaneously compared with two on the F-7MG. Le says F-7MG production will continue for several years as there is still a requirement in China and sales could potentially be made to six foreign militaries. The aircraft is already operated by China and Pakistan and Le says the first of 12 aircraft on order for Bangladesh will be delivered by early 2005.

Le says four FC-1 prototypes, “three flying and one test article”, are now being tested and the flight envelope should be completed by next October. “We plan to complete all of this by next year, maybe the third quarter,” he says.

Pakistan considered a European radar for the FC-1, but at least for the first batch has chosen to stick with Chinese-developed systems. Chengdu had hoped to fly one of its FC-1 prototypes at the Zhuhai air show last week but did not get the necessary approval from the Chinese government.

Also absent at the show was Chendu’s J-10 multirole fighter. The company has been hoping to take the wraps off the design for the last few years, but China remains reluctant to even acknowledge the programme exists.

I dont want to sound Nostradamus here , but If the files are placed before CCSA , thats the last stage after a lengthy process , technical evaluation , financial evaluation etc , Its not the question if the deal will be signed but when it is going to be signed , Had it not been the general election the BJP led government had almost given the go ahead for this deal , So may be the new government will give us a nice suprise before the Navy day .
If you look at the alternative , besides the Scorpene there are just two of them , the Type 214 HDW , which is not likely coz its been blacklisted coz of corruption charges , and the other is Amur-1650 or the newer one which will come when it comes , so the scorpene deal is a go go for the navy.

when it is going to be signed is the whole question. Next year, next decade or next century. I can predict with reasonable certainity that among the three programs one at a time will signed. either scorpene, Amur or Nuclear but not 3 at time. and scorpene deal wont be $4.5B(that 200000 crore). So where is the fault line in my statement. Regarding BJP government if it is so found of defence agreements than why it left all the financial burden to current government.

    Its a translation.

Realistically, i wonder why Pakistanis are going for this aircraft. Look at the satement

We always loose this point because of the noise generated in such discussion. J-10 and F-16 advanced blocks remain best bet against LCA.

Are you sure it is original Chinese government article ? It seems to me Chinese traslation of Military technology Feb 1 issue about LCA and FC-1. Which itself is out dated article.
on side note LCA is a dead project.

non beneficial to both parties? I think Russia also benefit throught Shanghai cooperation organization for stability in whole Euroasian region. I am not putting financial aspects as they will not be built by Sukhoi. Any way no body can count flankers inside China airbases. So if they can built extra for themselves no body is going to know it.
And J-11 is non issue no body is interested in that option.

Sure the incompetent Russians wont know if the Chinese renege on contractual agreements. The rest of your post is incomprehensible, as usual.

Even if they know what can they do?. Sell more. Remember Stability of whole caucas region.Financial aspect is not the only reason for selling RD-93 engine[

Russia is even ready to sell there weopons backdoor to PAF.

    Sure, sure.
I just counted a hundred MiG 29’s in the PAF Orbat yesterday.
If it takes that much pain to just get engines for the FC1, one can only imagine what would happen if the PAF sought actual integrated combat a/c..(not some logistics choppers etc).

PAF is not interested in either MIG-29 or Flanker. they were rejected even before Ukranian Tank deal with PA and India cannot stop. The same is the case of AA-10 BVR.
Personally i wouldn’t mind 15 to 20 upgraded J-11 if the have the same engine as J-10 for PAF only for long range Anti shipping role.
Ukaiane can not only maintain but also upgrade it.

Ukrainian specialists at the Orion research institute developed a frequency synthesizer for a fourth generation radar set for the MiG- 29M fighter aircraft. New innovative ideology was then offered which made it possible to synthesize frequency spectrum with much better noise performance and spectral and dynamic features compared with other models which had been developed. Multifrequency master oscillators-synthesizers of airborne equipment were developed further by a Ukrainian-Russian joint venture, the Fazotron-Ukrayina closed joint-stock company, which was set up on the foundation of the Orion research institute, and which is part of the [Russian] Phazotron-NIIR Corporation open joint-stock company.

In fact, the developments of Ukrainian specialists are topical and at the stage of upgrading avionics developed in the Soviet Union. I have in mind improving the elements of an airborne radar sight system which are a pilot’s “eyes and ears”. Improvements to the system easily enable the upgrading of aircraft from mark four to mark four plus. Only fifth generation aircraft, which leading states are just beginning to develop, are more advanced than this

    Firm’s competitive price advantage

[Pechoryna] Does the Ukrainian air force need elements of radar sets which your enterprise manufactures?

[Humennyy] Fazotron-Ukrayina fulfils orders placed by the Ukrainian air force. We began to manufacture microwave modules for the MiG-29 and Su-27 aircraft. These products are no longer manufactured in Russia; therefore, there are problems with their replacement. In addition to quality, the undeniable advantage of our products is their fairly affordable price. As a rule, our products cost 67-80 per cent less than those of Russian manufacturers. The [Odessa-based] Odessaviaremservis aircraft repair works under the Defence Ministry has recently ordered a receiver for the MiG-21 aircraft. Other aircraft repair works, for example, the Lviv state aircraft repair works and [Zaporizhzhya-based] Mig-Remont also use receivers made by Fazotron-Ukrayina to fix the MiG-29. As regards elements of radar sight systems in fighters developed in the Soviet Union, the enterprise assembles master oscillators for different types of avionics. Besides, Fazotron-Ukrayina could upgrade the air- to-air missile’s receiver, for example, that of the R-27.

In May 2002, the Price Negotiations Committee (PNC) had clinched the deal for six submarines at Rs 14,000 crore excluding the cost of infrastructure to be set up at Mazagon Dockyards Ltd
(MDL) in Mumbai. At present, the cost has risen to about Rs 20,000 crore.

this deal is not going to be signed.

You are quite missing my point. Its one thing to take limited steps. Another to p!ss off the Russians by breaking contractual agreements. Acrimony would be mutually non beneficial to both parties.
BTW, do you know any public Chinese auditing orgs etc? Any orgs similar to the GAO etc?

non beneficial to both parties? I think Russia also benefit throught Shanghai cooperation organization for stability in whole Euroasian region. Russian engines for Pak-bound Chinese fighters

    By Vladimir Radyuhin

MOSCOW, NOV. 3. Russia will supply engines for a multi-role fighter aircraft China is building jointly with Pakistan for the Pakistani Air Force, the Russian Arms-Tass news agency reported. Talks are on between Russia and China to supply up to 500 RD-93 engines developed by the Klimov factory, Arms-Tass said. It is the same engine that powers the Russian MiG-29 fighter.

The report would suggest that Russia has waived its earlier ban on the supply of the advanced MiG-29 engines for Pakistan-bound Chinese fighters. In 2001 the Pakistani media acknowledged that the Pakistan-China joint project to develop the Super-7 aircraft, would be delayed due to Russia’s refusal to supply the engines. “The talks on the (engine) contract have recently moved forward. Several rounds have been held this year,” Arms-Tass reported on Tuesday.

It has advantage over F-16 in intake design as they are flatter which give it space for two frontal BVR like Gripen. First prototype was combination of digital analogue system now it is fully digital.

Somehow I miss a second pylon between the bombs and the wingpylon…

    http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/equip/bru-55-jsow.jpg

they easily put one extra hard point between wing pylon and multiple rack. and CFT can also be added. Two pylons below the intakes as there is sufficient space like Gripen. So total pylons can be increased to 11 and add CFT over the top of it and you get top of the line Strike fighter from Air superiority.

Why add a canard to a relatively stable airframe?

From where you get this is stable design relative to something? Every thing looks exactly like F-16 apart from intake.

When the superior and cheap J-10 is still at hand, why to waste money for a gap filler. The money from military help can be used to fullfill other military needs too. Why waste time and money, when the successor of F-16 is still there? 😡

there is no evidence of PAF buying F-16 with its own money. and cannot afford two new platforms at same time.

    76 Su-30MKK (2 batches of 38)
    40 Su-27UBK (Batches of 6 + 6 + 28, the last 28 are R-77 compatible)
    36 Su-27SK Basic Variant

    So thats atleast 152….

Not sure about numbers of the locally built once (J-11).

i think there are 24 Su-30MK2 and with these 95 J-11 will make around 271 Flankers.
