Hmmm…vague recollection, but that’s all! Just had a look at scanned pics and the only one from the ’60’s was when I was 21 on holiday in Jersey. (1st overseas holiday, by BEA Vanguard!) Unfortunately I am clothed only in Speedo’s and I’m sure the mods would edit it out! I’ll have a dig through the albums and see what surfaces… Watch this space.
Talking of Fairey Surveys, look what I found in my collection today!
I was 15 too in 1961 Connie. You didn’t go to New Rd Sec Mod too did you?
In 1962 I joined Ginge at Westlands as an apprentice. They were still manufacturing, or refurbishing, Fairey Reed propellers, so we all acquired Fairey transfers that were applied to the props. I know Ginge had one attached to his Jawa. I don’t recall what happened to mine.
While on the north side, a few of the New Rd Sec Mod interns used to cross the Bath Road at lunch times to see what was about. Occasionally we passed through the terminal building/nissen hut, where one of our party terrified the rest of us, by shoplifting from the little shop there! It wouldn’t have been so bad, but once outside, he would shout about what he had nicked! Fortunately for the more law abiding of the pupils, he left the school to move to Wales. :diablo: (Welsh dragon…)
Was “Ginge” the chap with the Jawa motorbike that worked for Westlands?
I too used to hang around the Green Dragon after school, so I can only thing that the rest of you were “the big boys”, who were to be avoided.
The Green Dragon was officially the staff canteen for airport workers, so, depending on who was work what shift, you could be ejected, without the mandatory chips!
Other activity by the spotters on north side, was to rifle through the bins by the terminal building (sic). From there, you could obtain rolls of telex paper, which sometime gave details of expected unusual arrivals. Oh, yes, and partially used Ray-O-Vac batteries, which I thick were of US origin and of rather better quality than the UK ones, which corroded into your torches, seemingly overnight!
I agree with the other posters, it’s so refreshing to see photos of subjects other than static and landing airliners. Well done that man! Oh, the quality is nothing to be ashamed of at all! 🙂

Here’s a bit to add to it, though it needs paint…and wings…and rear end…and engines…and a lot of imagination!
