Looking at those interior shots of the Varsity takes me back to about 1960 when on an ATC Summer Camp at Manby. One of the tasks of the base was to get desk bound officers back into the air, by way of refresher courses. Myself and another cadet were lucky (?) enough to go in a Varsity WJ890 on one of the flights. We were sat facing the rear looking at the top of the wing.
All was going well, with a few circuits, but then the instructor decided his student should try some stall recovery… The 1st couple were OK, but then my companion began to look a tad pale and shortly after filled the bag provided. I can’t say that mine was directly influenced by his retching, or whether the stalls, now with one engine shut down, caused my reactions, but suffice to say, I followed suit!
As the flight lasted some 90 minutes, I can honestly say it was my least pleasant flying experience while in the ATC.
3 days later however, I experienced a far more comfortable flight in Valetta VW197, lasting 55 minutes, during which time we were flown over the Thor rocket launching pads at North Luffenham (?). I was fascinated during the flight by a loose rivet gently rotating on the port engine cowling…
When I was last there, about 12 years ago, I was surprised to see a line of Harriers there. It just shows how soon aircraft become redundant. It seems only yesterday that we had 2’s 3’s and 4 F-111’s in loose formation on their way back to Upper Heyford.
Nice pics Jur!
Not forgetting.
Short -ly after I posted this one…
Oh, do they usually come with wings and engines? Mine was at Pima AZ in 1998.
Steeping back to the lad with the hammer down his sock, or similar. In his defence, his mother actually said it was for defensive use…

Just a thought. They didn’t leave those South Georgia Company Whirlwinds out there did they. I’d hate to think of hoodies escaping in a classic helicopter.

Get rid of the Court of Human Rights. Get rid of political correctness. Supply all headmasters with swishy canes and encourage parents and police to clip ears when deemed necessary. Oh yes, and re-introduce the phrase “Carry on like that and I’ll give you something to cry about!” Yes, I think that’s a good start.

When we sent undesirables to Australia, not only did they not re-offend, well not in the U.K., but seem to have adapted well to their new environment. While I appreciate the current occupants of Australia could take a dim view of a load of hoodies being deposited there, I seem to recall that we still are “guardians” of South Georgia. As far as I’m aware it is uninhabited apart from a few seals, wandering albatross and penguins, so an ideal destination for looters. OK, there would be a cost to appease the do-gooders, but I’d be happy to shell out a few bob for some those nice military style jumpers to keep them warm and a fishing rod. The hoodies would also be of some use to stop their ears becoming chilled. 😀

Few more that are probably frying pans now.
