Thanks for that info Bruce but I said she was prepped to go to the States from RAF Benson not overhauled or repainted, sorry David to misquote you.
Why do you ask that, at Benson she had a system fitted that enabled the crew to keep the oil tanks topped up during the flight to the States via Iceland it consisted of some jerry cans and a handpump. I nearly had a flight in her the weekend before she departed but the CO at the time put a stop to it.
[QUOTE=David Burke]The Mosquito hardly flew at all in the last few years in Scotland. She was ferried down
to Booker and prepared for export.
Sorry to say that she was prepped at RAF Benson prior to her trip to the States. Here’s a piccie of her in our hangar
[QUOTE=Manston Airport]Are the BBMF not flying both there Hurricanes at FL or is one flying wit a spitfire around the country doing random things flypast etc?
On Saturday Lanc/Hurricane/Spitfire are displaying at Yeovilton, Duxford isn’t the only event on this weekend for us The Hurri / Spit will arrive tomorrow, the Dak on Sat and the Lanc will display on Sun but will not be landing
[QUOTE=michelf]Fluffy,
I think the reason you were permitted to restore but not run was one based on the IWM’s and RAFM’s policy of having aircraft in the best possible (as is reasonable) condition and preserved/ conserved in that manner….hence the risk of running was deemed to be outside of those policies…(does it make sense? Not necessarily, but that’snot the point)
You are probably right however the contract stated the aircraft was to restored back to the condition it was in prior to the accident hence the reason we wanted to run her
Quote Ken812 – in respect of Black 6 the man to speak to is a Mr Russ Snadden – who occasionally drops into the forum – he was the motive power behind the restoration.
I agree without Russ Black6 would not have been restored, but without his team it would not have flown. I had the privillage of working for Russ on this project for 20yrs. Finally an updated book was published with colour pictures and extra chapters including the accident/rebuild and move to Hendon
TT
If you had been there later you would of seen this
Might be
Only for about 20 years
See BBMF visit thread for latest project only 5yrs on this one so far.
The IWM I believe
Black6 was indeed restored to an airworthy condition, all the systems were in working order Unfortunately we were not allowed to run the engine for one last time. The engine was then inhibited, fuel tank removed, sold and replaced with original
After “Black 6″s crash in duxford, it was restored to static condition and is now on display in RAFM Hendon.
Can I ask what you believe the differences between a static rebuild and one to flying condition are apart from the obvious. Maybe using non standard materials that would not be used if the a/c was going to fly is one example
