I posted some details on the History thread, as I was on the Shoreham thread when I learned about it: http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?136128-Grasshoppers-team-crash-in-Switzerland
It was a formation of Ikarus C-42 from the German Grasshoppers formation team. Very, very sad. What a bad weekend after the Shoreham disaster. My thoughts go out to all involved.
This accident involved one aircraft crashing on farm buildings, but there are no reports so far of any associated injuries.

I just heard that it was indeed an ultralight formation(Ikarus C-42) from the German Grasshoppers team. Very, very sad.
Re post 137 above, local media are reporting this new crash at Dittingen near Basle. I have no details yet, but it seems it was a formation of three ultralights of which two collided. According to one report one pilot “ejected” – I presume that means used a pyrotechnic parachute system. The other died. What a sad weekend.
I quote a friend: nobody seems to know anything so far except that the aircraft crashed onto the A27, which is now closed. Emergency Services are on site and the show has been cancelled until further notice
Very very sad
I have heard from friends with Twitter who say that the news is good, and that it’s bad. Which is right? Did the pilot get out?
I was watching the live stream. The T7 arrived for a low pass and the stream was suddenly stopped. The news I hear is not good.
Mothminor: I don’t know if OUAS Chipmunks carried yellow bands plus the Oxford dark blue horizontal stripe in the early days, but when I was a member (1961-3) we had day-glo plus the Oxford blue stripe. WK638 and WZ860 illustrated.
I refer back to my post 2 above. Does anyone know if other units than RAFC used blue bands?
Re the date they were introduced, I recorded a Varsity with blue bands in 1958, while at the Cottesmore Battle of Britain display 17.9.1960 Vampire T11 XE954 “11”. Jet Provost XM458 “20” and Chipmunk WB562 all had blue bands.
Tony: thanks for those details. I am hoping that I-MARC still exists in the hands of Sandro Pagliarin. I might be able to go and see it even!
Mothminor: yes, I hope it bears fruit.
All: wouldn’t it be great if my wife could be reunited with the Argus she flew in in 1954?! She must have been inspired by that first flight, as we still fly together. I think her next flight in a light aircraft was with me in a Chipmunk.
No I hadn’t seen that, Wieesso! I’ll contact him.
Thanks for the PM!
Good idea, Mothminor. So, anyone with news of VH-JCG?
I am also checking to see if I-MARC is still around. Galliate is not THAT far from where I live!
Thanks Mothminor. I assume there was some mix up with airframes. I wrote to Joe Baugher and to Eddie Coates and the confusion remains. I agree that a possibility is what you report on http://www.adf-serials.com.au/2a36.htm, but that A36-1 was 415. We may never know. If I-MARC still exists the only hope is to look for its c/n plate!
Nice bit of research on your part.
Nothing to do with a Chipmunk, but a remark about blue bands that has puzzled me for years. There used to be a Vampire T11, XE887 outside the HQ of 115 Squadron ATC at RAF Peterborough. I was a member. I have noted that it was delivered there in November 1963 and bore “Cranwell bands” ie blue. However XE887 never served at Cranwell, but at 4FTS. So I wonder if blue bands were ever used for non-Cranwell aircraft.
But the memories linger on Jim.
