I am guessing my first flyer would have been 1977 at Greenham Common, my first airshow as a 7 year old. I would have also seen the Science Museum example around the same time and Doug Arnolds G-BAUP at Blackbushe around 1978.
I must admit I had never really been a Spitfire man, they were very rare in the late 70’s and early 80’s and jets were more common and exciting. Mind you I have seen 76 spitfires and Seafires looking at my database!

Great photos, really pleased you are showing some of the more ‘mundane ‘ visitors which I find just as interesting as the warbirds, keep it up please.

Here are 5 Lancasters pictured at Blackbushe,7/9/56 SW283,SW327, SW366,SW367,SW293 from the school of Maritime Reconnaissance St mawgen, they were withdrawn from use a few months later. I am guessing only a St.Mawgen BoB display that year would have seen more.

The Hampden that went to the Bicester scrap dump, the Canadair Argonaut that went to the Heathrow fire dump and the Radlett Halifax for starters. However my my main wish would be the government didn’t close my local airport, Blackbushe, in 1960 and then erased almost all of a perfectly preserved ww2 RAF base from the map.

CWH Museum could you please indicate where the Lanc will be operating out of when it is not flying from Coningsby, lots of us would like to see the lanc on the ground as well as in the air. Can I assume it will operate out of Bournemouth Airport for their show weekend?

The weekend before one of the British Antarctic Survey Twotters was hangared at Staverton, these are all red. The spend the summer in the UK and the winter in the Antarctic when they have their summer.

I spoke about this exact subject to Harold Bamberg who set up Eagle Airways. The Dak was more adaptable, and easier to convert between pax and cargo, although Eagle did their own Viking cargo conversion. The Viking was faster and had longer range. It meant the Viking could reach more of the Mediterranean resorts in one hop and save on refuelling stops. More importantly the Viking spares were all easily source-able in the UK, some Dak spares were in short supply and needed to be paid for in US dollars. Eagle purchased almost the entire BEA fleet so they had no shortage of spares, but they still operated some Daks because they were better for short range cargo flights.

Has anybody any info where the aircraft will operate out of on 23-24/8? I would love to see the aircraft operate from Dunsfold and my attendance will rely on the lanc being on the ground, if not i will go to little Gransden as normal.

Have a look here http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=D8409770 the ‘record of events’ for August 1940 should contain the info you need and all the flights for the squadron that month.. Thats if the squadron were diligent filling it out, not all were, but worth a go at £3.24 for the pdf.

The thing I do not understand is that Manston with KLM, Cargolux and the other smaller freight operators during 2013/14 had to be a more profitable place than it was in previous years? So how come it suddenly has to be closed? My wife’s best friend used to live across the road in Minster and last year it seemed busier than ever, certainly busier than the post EU-jet collapse period. To be honest the best Manston could hope for would be the cargo flights, the KLM link and some summer inclusive tour flights. The Thanet Way does make the airport more accessible but its also makes Gatwick and Stansted more accessible to local customers who could use Manston. As I said the logical thing is to sell off the northside and use the money to develop the airport.

This very much smacks of the closure of Plymouth. IIRC local property developers purchase airport and run it for a while and then say it has to be closed as not viable. I went to Plymouth a few months ago and the airport is totally intact but plenty of building work under the approaches. What I do not get with manston is that you have the old north airfield that has not been used for flying since the ATC gliders left. This area is massive and could be sold for development while keeping the airport across the road open. The local area does not need houses, it needs jobs first.
