Thanks, Kovy. Interesting. And perfectly logical IMO 🙂
OK for recce with Reco-NG (pictures). I still don’t believe SPECTRA is that magic it may have been that useful for Elec OrBat assessment (if so, why bother to keep ASTRAC?).
Even if SPECTRA can’t replace ASTRAC, it still makes sense to send Rafales to test SPECTRA’s capabilities in the ELINT/SIGINT field prior to the attack, so you know what to expect when you actually go in, and what SPECTRA can and cannot do compared to ASTRAC. It doesn’t mean you should not use your best assets as well.

I think that if the seekers have been kept relevant, the R40 makes sense, especially in IR version. I think SARH missiles still have a role to play in high ECM environments.
Keep in mind that the only Iraqi air kill in GW 1 was against a F18 and with R40.
Nic
If they did, then the AdlA are not the highly professional and sensible force that I thought they were. You’d use dedicated Elint platforms to gather that kind of information, since the data gleaned would be of higher fidelity.
BS.
It would have made sense if only to test SPECTRA against the Libyan air defenses.

It doesn’t say that the SAM sites were struck later. Regardless, the point is DASS was employed, and employed in an ELINT role.
DASS managed to tell pilots that there was a SAM site active in the vicinity, and even gave a bearing. WOW.
Cause that’s all this quote says. Anything you’d guess from that would just be speculation.
Nic
In Libya, it was apparently able to target SAM sites for destruction by tracing their emissions. That’s enough for it to be declared capable of performing ELINT operations.
No, what was said in articles about the typhoon was that DASS allowed it to detect SAM sites that had been repaired in order to enable to strike them later. It wasn’t said whether the Typhoons did said strikes, and it is very likely that they were performed by Tornados or Rafales.
There was never any mention of a Typhoon striking a SAM site.

I said total programme cost = order for the 286 Rafales + through life support.
And the Rafale actually has a carrier version 😉
STOVL version is useless anyway.
Nic
The development of the F35 has cost more than the total programme cost of the Rafale. Talk about affordable 😮
DSI is a magazine and the White Book is the official bible of France futur warfare system .
Secondly , this :
is a nonsense and a gross misunderstanding of Sarkozy ‘s words .
Cheers .
Come on it’s not just his words, it’s all his actions since he was finance minister.
Nic
Or read DSI.
Nic
Hardly.. If that is true, US would press France to block the Mistral sale to Russia.
Which of course France will never ever never do in real life.
???
Edit: swerve said it much better than I did.
This is something the French seem to be doing rather well at present; this stands rather sadly in contrast to the UK and our worship of the US.
Sarkozy is getting us there. I sure hope that he doesn’t get another term to stop the slaughter. In the latest DSI magasine, he’s quoted saying that France should be remain relevant by cooperating (read we are going to become another US puppet).
Nic
I wonder how you guys can still buy food with such levels of inflation in the US.
Nic
Good call on Japan’s part. I hope they don’t get into any form of partnership to avoid external influence. But I suspect that they have learnt the lesson from the F2.
Nic
Yep, here is latest estimate !

I love how they removed the cost of the engine to try not to scare people too much
I love how they calculate inflation. I think Ben Bernanke should ask LM their forecasts about inflation. Be afraid, be very afraid.
