I can’t wait to see operational AtoG payloads on typhoons. I’m tired of the airshow loadouts that didn’t even make room for an LDP.
Will the Typhoons be able to self designate or will they work in conjuction with other assets?

We’ve found that Mirage has automated intakes, whereas Tornado doesn’t.
You “forgot” the fact that while Mirage 2000C or dash do, but the D>/N don’t, and the D is the version which is compared to the Tornado here.
And at the same time the Mirage remains much faster than the tornado GR4. And I would be interested to know the dry combat cruise speed of both.
Also the longer range compared to the Mirage is debatable, the RAF quotes a low level combat radius of 400 NM

My arguement is with the single fact that KOVY seems to think that a fly-by-wire (electric) jet is more reliable than a mechanical one.
You are putting words in Kovy’s mouth here, he never said that electric was better than mechanical, but that automatic/manual was more prone to fail than manual/fixed.
Let’s just take the example of the refueling probe. The advantage of a fiexed probe is two fold:
– not moveable = no system to make it pop in & out = less chance to break, even if the chance for the moveable probe failing is very remote.
– no system to make it pop in & out = no maintenance on such system = easier and faster maintenance overall.
Same goes for the canopy closing mechanism and so on (this one reminds me of the F22 pilot stuck in his plane because the canopy wouldn’t open resulting in mucho cost)

French rafales destructed a SA3 site a few days ago. They used AASM bomb to destroy it outside of the range of the missiles. They declined an offer of F16CJ escort from USAF as not usefull for this mission.

7 Scalp missiles fired (2/3 from Mirage 2000D, 1/3 from Rafale M (single seat)). all of them struck their targets.

The NG engine will actually be cheaper than the RM12 in the C/D…
Also more use of COTS means that the Gripen NG costs will be quite affordable (at least if you order 126 of them).
The mk2 is far from ready — and we don’t know yet if it will even fix the problems of the mk1.
Besides one could also argue that if India wants an expensive twin-engine fighter they might as well get more SU-30mki… :diablo:
If 126 rafales are ordered the price will decrease accordingly. But the fact is that people make as if the NG will cost the same as previous generation Gripens, and it’s very likely to cost more.

Well Rafale won’t be twice as expensive as a Gripen NG. We’re not talking Gripen C/D here. If cost was all that problematic, it would have been even more cost effective to buy the M2k production line and build as many as you wanted.
Besides, one could also argue that if you want a lightweight fighter you might as well get more LCa Mk2.

Tornado and 2000D are superb strike aircrafts and the versatility of the Tornado is top notch with storm shadow, EPW, and especially brimstone. Personally I see no reason why it shouldn’t be used in the current conflict, quite the contrary.
I’d like to see some 2000-9 ground attack configurations though.

That is what it should cost, what it is actually costing the French MoD is €351,158 per unit(1) 😮
Paveway IV is £30,000 per unit (E35,000)(2).
351,158 / 35,000 = 10.03
So, AASM costs 10.03 times more than the Paveway IV.

4 Mica is much better than 2 AMRAAM and 2 ASRAAM/IRIS T when it comes to operational flexibility, and I think we both agree it will be enough almost all the time. However I was just saying that there is plenty of room to add 2/4 missiles should the need arise. I know neither were integrated so far but they could be if needed.

at the moment the Rafale won’t carry more than 4 AAMs in any AG configuration as the outer wing pylons aren’t cleared yet. But that’s already sufficient for the vast majority of scenarios.
Well the versatility of the Mica IR makes up for this as your missiles are both BVR/WVR-off boresight capable, so in most cases you don’t need as many missiles as when carrying dedicated BVR or WVR missiles. Besides, should the need arise those pylons can still be cleared, and there is always the possibility to carry two missiles under the belly as in the original Rafale concept.

We’ll see if retex from Libya emphasizes the need of a Brimstone type weapon.

Thats where the Rafale is lacking. It really needs those laser rocket launchers on the external pylons. Integrating brimstone would be great too. The 125kg a2sm will help somewhat.
