according to Merchet’s blog, yesterday 4 Rafales in atoa configuration took off, followed by a pair (one atoa and one with Recon NG), and later a pair with one atoa and one aasm. This last pair fired the first shots on kadhafi troops.

Nobody will shed any tears if Qaddaffi lost, but it is still unwise to be too blatant in taking liberties and deliberately overstepping your UN mandate. For one thing it will make others more wary about agreeing to one next time and may demand clearer wording and thus delay possible future UN action in similar situations.
The other issue would be practicality. How would a pilot know a ammo truck from one crammed with refugees trying to flee to the rebels? If your ROE is as loose as ‘anything civilian or military moving west is fair game’ it’s only a matter of time before one of your pilots blows up something they shouldnt have and bring on a media and political sh!tstorm.
Similar thing but even more risky in supporting rebel assaults on Qaddaffi controlled population centres. It will almost be a given that there will be collateral damage in such missions. How would you explain how one of your planes managed to kill a school full of kids helping the rebels attack a city when you were supposed to be safeguarding ALL civilians?
You make a lot of sense, but you assume that the planes aren’t guided by FACs on the ground. I think differently and I’m pretty sure that at least french & british teams are on the ground guiding the strikes, at least those near Benghazi and such.

What spec has not been met?
No, price is not a spec.
Oh don’t worry the price will be met :diablo:

sorry, but i’m don’t understand. St Dizier is like 2200km away from Bamghazi. Why are Rafales flying all the way from there to patrol the sky? They have ablut 3000km range. Right? Even with in air refueling, its a grueling flight.
Why not just use carriers?
On tv they said the missions required 4 inflight refuelings and that 6 KC135 were involved.

Rafales i suppose? France seems to be leading this alone. The rest of the coalition is still thinking and planning and the french pretty much decide and act unilaterally with no coordination with the “allies”. I am really surprised with Sarko, it’s almost as he is taking this personally (maybe the campaign funding claim made him mad)?
That and also because Khadafi made a fool of Sarkozy during his last visit in Paris. I’m sure Sarkozy still remembers this.
Ironically it was mostly about a Rafale deal

8 Rafales are involved according to Jean-Dominique Merchet.

Le monde says that:
2 Rafales went on reconnaissance mission
4 Rafale on interdiction mission
(all from St Dizier)
2 Mirage 2000D from nancy and 2 Mirage 2000-5 escorts from Dijon joined them.

BTW the Forbin frigate is off the coast of Libya, it can be link16ed with Rafales and use them as part of its weapon systems.
Jean-Dominique Merchet says four Rafales were involved in reconnaissance flight and show of force type missions. He adds on his blog that other fighters are ready to lauch for ground attack missions.

I wonder if the “delay” in the UN action is due to the need to get those assets in.
If it is true that air strikes have begun, then they are probably already there.
Nic
Rafales based in St Dizier have flown reconnaissance missions for several hours today over “the whole libyan territory” without any issue noted, according to l’express newspaper.
Besides it seems material and food are being loaded on the Charles de Gaulle.
edit: yeah talk about a timely introduction of the reco-NG

I’ll bet that there are already boots on the ground, for instance SaS/SBS, 2 REP/1st RPIMa, and probably half a dozen other services.

Rafales for Libya! :diablo:
India should integrate Mica to the Tejas. The thing would be ideal for a lightweight fighter, weighting only 113 kg vs the 105 kg of the R-73, but bringing serious bvr capabilities.
a Tejas with 1 tank, 2 Mica EM and 2 Mica IR would be a pretty serious threat.

The only time scorpion was borderline was when fonk/sempaix/whatever drove him mad, but otherwise I’ve never seen it happen.
