It can be defeated, if you can simultaneously jam the entire frequency range the APG-77 uses. This makes you a pretty beacon though, for passive shots.

The nice thing with AESA jamming is that you can point your jamming straight at the emmitter on a narrow beam, so other sensors in the area have a much harder time detecting your jamming, let alone firing on the beacon.

if the rafale had gunned the raptor the other five times, they would have said so. I take it as the other 5 times they called to knock it off before somebody was at an advantage, most 1v1 end in a mutual kill or both disengaging from what I understand so it’s not out of the ordinary

    I agree.

Don’t you think Brazil will integrate the A-Darter?

I havn’t found any indications on what it might cost though. Perhaps its not cheaper to acquire than the Mica IR.

I mixed up the A darter and the R darter. I think what the Rafale needs is the A darter; not the R darter.

Honestly I think the Rafale or any new gen aircraft can do without the R-darter.

AASM’s closest US munition is not the JASSM, but the JSOW.

But we were talking about the Storm Shadow here, not AASM.

6 AASMs and 3 MICAs sound impressive in the first place, but if those AASM were “released” against pre-planned closely spaced targets and the MICAs launched against closley spaced targets it would be nice, but not THAT impressive. If those AASMs were launched against targets of opportunity it would be certainly impressive.
As said before the F-16CJ is not an overly specialised SEAD asset and the HTS is not necessarily the best system, so it’s actually not very surprising that an advanced ESM suite which is part of the SPECTRA.

I definately doubt that 6 targets of opportunity could be hit within a minute, let alone while firing Micas at 3 different targets. Most likely what happened was a pre-planned strike of 6 AASM while at the same time attacking 3 aerial targets. This is definately impressing enough for me!

If the Rafale is chosen… could take the R-Darter? Or must be armed wiht Matra Mica?

With the transfer of technology I think it should be possible for the brazilian industry to integrate their weapons themselves. I’d really like to see the R-darter integrated. Be it by dassault or by the brazilian themselves.

I think the Rafale really deserves a cheaper alternative to the Mica IR for self defense, for situations where the range of the Mica isn’t required.

To a native English speaker, it has only one meaning. “Porkies” in this context can only be interpreted as Jackonicko says, i.e. untruths – but said in a way intended to soften the impact. Although the origin of ‘porkie’ is in rhyming slang for lie (‘porkie pie’), it is far milder than an outright accusation of lying. It might be used about slight distortions, or untruths told for humourous effect. It would not usually be used for, e.g., untruths told for malicious reasons.

It would never, by a native English speaker, be thought to say anything about any French person, only their words.

Note that is an English usage which as far as I know is unknown in the USA.

In other words it’s pretty much the kind of distortion/untruths that one would find in jackonicko’s posts. Thanks for clarifying the meaning, I think we’re going to put the term to good use from now on 😀

One should also consider how few members on the forum actually associate with jackonicko’s points. While some from various nationalities seem to agree about jackonicko’s bias; including Brits by the way.

Jackonick spreads to many “half truth” and rumors than the french contingent here (me included) feels the need to always balance his biased views.

    The truth will out.

Let’s hope it doesn’t “out” through an article from Jon Lake 😮

Nicolas, You also seem not to have undestood the subleties of this purchase. Bear with me for a while…

Embrae is a company born inside the FAB, created by FAB visionaries and created to give THE COUNTRY a real aerospace development sector. FAB is very proud that around 70% of its aircreft have been built in Brazil. despite the fact that almos all of FABs brazilian aircraft use US supplied engines (like an hypoteical Gripen NG would) it is a common concept inside FAB that the current level of Embraer technical skils allow FAB to desire for a less-US conected supply line. Recent US embargoes on missile/rocket related technologies as well as AMXs and Super Tucanos for Venezuela have left a distinctly sour taste in the FAB leadership’s mouth… Embraer is a very important asset to FAB if it fails, loses a lot of money or goes broke, most of the Brazilian Air Force Fleet will be grounded with it. On the political scxenario Embraer is a very significant campaign/elections fund donator so their financial well being is critical to the local political world. Rhe recent Estrategia Nacional de Defesa has put it as bluntly as possible there will be no moder Braqzilian armed forces without a heathy and modfern competitive national defense industry. See? This is why Embraer’s priorities are central to this and any future purchase decision relating to defence equipment. I can assure you that for tyhe lack of a REAL enemy at the cates the development of the local defense industry is MUCH more important to Brazil as a nation than the detailed tecnical requirements drafted by the FAB generals…

“Strong Saab lobying” is not driving the facts in Brazil, what’s driving them is Dassault’s incapacity to address national development need as well as Saab has been able to do.

Do I make myself clear on this issue?

    Regards,

    Hammer

Very clear thanks for this informative post.

I didn’t think the FAB was that involved with Embraer and vice versa, and I see the interest that FAB gets from the transfer of technology.

However, one could argue that the french offer of a partnership goes beyond the single FX2 purchase, on a much wider strategic scope (subs, nukes, security council lobbying). Maybe less interesting for the FAB per se, but maybe more interesting in Brazil.

And there’s still this report that a few very high ranking former FAB leaders were hired by Saab. So the lobbying accusations aren’t without basis.

We don’t know what Boeing and Dassault are doing.

I didn’t say they did. But Saab is doing it’s share too.

please nicolas, the evaluation was done together with fab to evaluate TOT. not only FAB

I’d say something would be seriously wrong if the AdlA took care of Dassault’s interests BEFORE their own. Same thing if the Flyggvappnet took care of Saab’s interest before it’s own. It’s the same for the FAB.

strong lobbying? i say dassault or france did its homework in this department…

No disagreement the deal will be won throug politics, whoever wins.

just because the president like it to be “strong lobbyism” i dont think it is strong lobby. The evaluation was done fair and square! 30000 pages with lobbying material 🙂

    I disagree completely.

Just a thought: Perhaps it’s more than just profit. If Embraer thought that it could work more efficiently with Saab, then that would be to the benefit of FAB too, since they could adapt the plane far more effectively to their needs. Then FAB would surely prefer (up to a degree anyway) Embraer’s choice. If there is profit too, then that’s even better, though irrelevant, directly anyway. FAB directly benefits from Embraer’s activities and research programs since they are on the same team, so in a way, what is good for Embraer is also good for FAB.

But then again, neither Embraer nor FAB will ink the deal, Lula will.

I think they are more likely interested because they can get a golden retirement from the FAB when moving to Embraer afterwards…

    I totally understand your distemper.

Well, it’s not like Saab is playing as fair as it gets, considering the lobbying they put on the FAB through Embraer and former FAB leaders.

I’m not criticising them for doing so as they do need the deal as much as Dassault does.
