What you described is actually done by the russians since the 1980s. Both the MiG-29 and the Su-27 their their IRSTs in conjunction with the radar to gather range at longer distances, while the LRF is used at lower distances. These are just short pings as you described it to gather the range.
BTW some modern IRST/FLIR systems can kinetically range threats (such as PIRATE).
Do you have any info on how PIRATE is used to get a range?
Nic
Longer than the 33 (?) km of the OSF rangefinder in optimal conditions, and enough to exploit any extra range from the sensor compared to the LRF.
And I might say even withing LRF range, considering most planes will now come with laser detectors, I think it would be wiser to delete it alltogether (or keep it for backup or AtoG) and develop a radar rangeing mode instead.
Nic
they can say what they like till they get the ng sensor
perhaps a french site will have more credibility for you

I don’t know why you say I need convincing, the link I gave told pretty much the same info as faltenin. Besides I found it in one of HIS posts on a french speaking board.
this seems accepted
ir sensor
mica 3rd gen,
asraam, aim-9, iris 4th gen
python5 5th gen
I disagree about the 3d gen vs 4th gen. The document (official) that was linked clearly implies that the choice for the mica was made between 2 technologies and they picked theirs instead of the one used on the ASRAAM. Besides in the link you provide, faltening says he is unsure of how both technologies compared in terms of field efficiency.
I find it hard to be as categorical in this seeker classification. The way I see it, it’s more a choice between longer detection vs better counter countermeasures.
Translated into: The matrix, theorically more sensitive than the stick, allows for longer range. But bispectral detection, allowing for better resistance to counter measures is more achieveable with sticks. That solution has been chosen for the Mica, with two sticks.
Nic
ok I found that the Mica seeker is of different technology. I have to look into it more closely. It seems to be 2 different specter IR CCD sticks. I have to look more into it but I don’t have the time right now. I’ll check later on today.
I see the numbers of 2 bars of 288X4 in different specters for better resistance to jamming.
Nic
EDIT check page 256 http://www.chear.defense.gouv.fr/fr/pdef/histoire/missiles_tactiques_comaero.pdf
They say they retained the 2 sticks formula compared to the 128×128 matrice as it was easier to allow for bispectral detection, which was more resistant to jamming.
Homing head
Imaging IR 128×128 element focal plane array
Focal plane array too for the Mica as proven in my last link. I can’t find the resolution, but without the Mica resolution at hand I don’t see how you can claim the ASRAAM is any better. Do you have it for the Mica too?
Nic
read the mbda link, better imager for a start
I read the link and I can’t find where it says that the ASRAAM has a better imager than the Mica
The MICA is also an Imaging IR missile.

who said a hms gives a 360 ? it wasnt with a hms, it was actually off-board, like the mica. but obviously a hms can deploys a loal missile anywhere in his viewing area
how is the rafale hms going ?
What exactly does the ASRAAM has that the MICA hasn’t, besides inferior range? 😉
The ares is too small. I have doubts as to it’s range and payload, and besides there’s no room for an observer/UCAV controller/troops. Also I doubt it’s capability to take battle damage and come home..
Also, should it be the Ov10, then it needs 1 25mm gun on each side instead of those two .50.
Nic
No video? What a surprise 😮
I think that having a hand in A400M with airbus and a hand in C390 with dassault would be a win-win for france. Especially considering we are going to need a smaller plane to complement the A400M. CASA planes could do, but it we have a hand in C390 it’s all for the better.
But honestly I’m all for ordering off the shelf C390s if the brazilians are able to make it right, and I don’t see why they wouldn’t be able to. They’ve made a few very good civilian designs and I don’t see why they couldn’t make a good transport.
Nic
I have a scanner, but I have no clue where I put that issue of le fana
That’s french organisation 101
I’ve had the opportunity to see some Mirage Delta (Mirage IIIR for example) hit by birdstrikes. It was as if they had been hit by AAA. Each time the pilots were luky enough to find their way home!!!!
thanks for the info I guess I downplay the thing.
Nic
Bird strike, not from enemy fire. The affair was revealed by an aviation magazine reporter – you know how many reporters (,foreign spies,) and aviation buffs were watching the runways, right? I had a friend that told me that it hit one on the way out and had to return. The russkies like to prop up their little brothers in Serbia because they use their equipment.
A bird cut half of one vertical stabiliser? That’s a little far fetched if you ask me
Nic
now we’re talking. too bad it took us a few pages to get to that point 😀
I’d say it should be a plane of the A1 family with a turboprop. Especially in the multi-seats layout.

It would have long range (battlefield persistance), and a decent loadout. It could come in two seats side by side layout for CAS, and more for CAS+punctual/urgent very light transport of people or material, and there could even be a UAV control version.
