I’m glad Northrop got the win!

I think your conclusion is wrong. In a bombing campaign like say Libya both a re quite evenly matched atm.
Wait! What?
Mirage III would make short work of the SH if they had been used correctly. They have done before (the SH had training experience on the way to the Falklands with Adl’A Mirage III, & from what I read in the what-if thread they were slaughtered by Australian Mirage IIIs afterwards.
Starting a dogfight when you are bingo-fuel is just a bad idea.
Even basing the Skyhawks on the islands with AIM-9 would be enough to defends them from the SH.

That japanese F23 is gorgeous!!!
Now I want to be the president of Japan!

They sure know how to keep the suspense going!
Some people need to watch terminator again!
If I’m not mistaken, a controller on board a frigate (for instance) can make a Rafale launch a Mica.
I think what you’re describing is just integrated air defense.
He would but maybe not in the same manner? Who knows.
Nic
Well why you need an F35 you just send a drone up and you’re good.

But they don’t exist in single seat variant.
For me the Gripen & SH look great in two seater but not so in single seater.

Love the 2 seater F15 also.

Same with these two aircraft, the Rafale is a great workhorse, the Typhoon is more of a thoroughbred. So much depends on if your racing or ploughing a field… :-), my opinion has always been you could just possibly plough a field after winning a race, but you’ll never win a race after ploughing a field.
Well the Rafale can plough your Typhoon bases with nukes. If they’re too far it can do so from a carrier. And if the carrier is too far, some other Rafales could refuel the striker. :dev2:
That said the analysis in the first post is not bad, but I’d like to add a few things wrt AtoA fights.
While it’s true that the Typhoon is getting an AESA & DASS has been greatly updated, it’s also true that DDM-NG is more than meets the eye, that SATCOM & directional data-links are being added to the Rafale to enhance discretion & communication (read situational awareness), and that SPECRA is going from GAA to GaN antennas…
In the AtoA Arena, while it’s true that AMRAAM may have more range than Mica, Mica has the unique ability to send two different missiles seekers which would make defending against it much more difficult. Especially if the defending fighter is unaware that the IR seeker is coming and wastes a lot of energy defending from the first EM missile, only to be caught with its energy depleted by an IR Missile a few seconds later.
Also there is the OSF video channel which greatly enhances identification capabilities in complex ROE scenarios. I can’t remember a war where you could shoot your BVR missiles at max range with 100% positive identification.
Last but not least there is the issue of persistence. With so much more external fuel, there has to be a tactical advantage in aerial combat.

Those “upgraded” F5s could be upgraded a bit like the Mig 21 BIZON. A recent radar + ECM & R77/73. Maybe even an IRST & they’re good to go.

Pentagon says F-35 ejection seat fixes could take another year
Why do they even need to fix that in the first place? Just ban lighter pilots to fly the damn thing.
Nic
Would France even sell it to them?
They would probably agree to a deal and then the americans/israelis would pressure dear leader to cut the deal and pay penalties instead.
