Yes I know and it’s more than a little bit daft, keeping up carrier quals for a carrier wing that doesn’t have a carrier and has never been given an indication that they will get one is utterly pointless. A complete waste of a very limited military budget.

Besides which Nic stated that both sides had a carrier!

I stand corrected I thought they still had one. Token capability but still. My bad.

Might as well ask why Mexico doesn’t take Martinique. It makes as much sense.

What we should really be discussing is the prospects for a Mexican-Venezeualan alliance to re-take Guadeloupe, Martinique & St Martin from their colonialist oppressors.

It was a joke. I don’t want Argentina to take the Falklands either. Obviously the people there want to remain british it’s good enough for me. The whole exercice is rhetorical.

The Mirage F.1M have already had a substantial upgrade, & are rather old. It’s probably not worthwhile upgrading them again.
The Brazilian Mirage 2000B/C are so old that an upgrade to -9 standard would probably mean pretty well turning them into new aircraft. Not worth it.

The ratio of 2:1 for the division of UAE/Qatari Mirage 2000s does not reflect the realities of relative power or budgets. More realistic would be for Argentina to get the Qatari Mirage 2000-5 in addition to Mirage F.1, & Brazil to get all the Mirage 2000-9.

Sounds good if you ask me. Brazil would have quite a good stopgap for years to come, and if they manage to get full ToT, it should be good for Embraer to develop upgrates & then even a MLU, and maybe pave the way for a project of advanced trainer / light fighter before they can tackle a real fighter. Maybe join AMCA as a junior partner.

Brazil isn’t the regional power, the USA are.

Cooperation means numbers big enough to make domestic projects sustainable.

Come to think of it. Brazil should take the Falklands 😀

I didn’t say they need to buy them to occupy the Falklands. I said it would go a long way to switch the balance of power with the RN detachment in the area. Period. It’s all about becoming a regional power again and not having to submit to the rule of anyone. Although it’s even more true for Brazil which should be the regional power.

Quite an impassioned defense of HAL. But as long as PSU’s run on quotas where merit is not the only consideration, expect sub standard performance. Privatize them and they will perform much better.

Privatise them and foreign capital is going in faster than you can spell mistake.

Seems to me this is an historical/political/cultural question more than a military one. Probably more to be folded into questions regarding the potential furthering of South American integration extending UNASUR, e.g. common currency, etc.

Integration means the beginning of the end. Just look at the EU. I’m only talking military alliance & cooperation.

You know those scores had a pretty severe risc factor included? The current Gripen Demo surpasses the minimum requirements in all areas meaning it currently is over 6 in all tests. And it is still in development. The Rafale was more mature and thus it got a score closer to the actual performance.

Sorry but you are mixing the first & second parts of the report. In the first part it was the planes as they were tested. In the second part the risk factor was added to take into account the fact that many capabilities were just paper capabilities.

The swiss air force would disagree with you here. They rated the Rafale higher both in defensive counter air and offensive counter air, in the 2008 version and in the future planned version. The introduction of AESA & DDM NG, OSF IT only make things worse for the typhoon.

But such comment’s got to tell you how myth propagated by some “journalists” like Jon Lake or jackonicko are hard to eradicate.

But Qatari’s at least have been mulling an M2000-5 replacement for a long time now and appear to be waiting on UAE decision.

They may just be waiting till the indian contract is signed to see if it does have an impact on the price Dassault is asking.

But in my opinion they are waiting to keep it as some sort of leverage for when they need to blackmail/ask a favour to the french government. They are just holding it in front of the french politicians as a carrot in the meanwhile, and they are going to “milk” the carrot as long as they can.

No I don’t think so, I think he was following orders from his masters. The fact that Khadafi was murdered by french agents was probably a hint that sarkozy didn’t want people to find out too much about his volte-face.

The goal here is to make a supranational entity that can’t be broken down when people rightfully demand that europe as we know it (this europe deserves no capital letter) is dismantled.

Also since airbus is perceived as french here, it will probably pave the way for the political killing of Dassault and removing it from the fighter market. Europe’s new fighter will be an airbus project which is going to be delievered late, at much extra cost and without full capabilities.
