Can someone explain the justification as to why Russian forces need to still be be in Poti?

a crude justification would be the need for US err .. “Coalition” troops still being in Iraq and Afghanistan maybe ?

It is far from the front lines to the disputed areas and as I see it the only value to Russia in being there is that it is the terminus to the pipeline from Central Asia and it is also the only deep water port that the other “Stan’s” have access to.

The value seems to be of National interest. Somewhere down the line,I think, people tend to believe that national interest is the sole preserve of the “west” .. and other countries acting in their own isn’t quite treated/viewed as acting in National interest.

Someone told me that Lenta.ru reported that the Georgians are AGAIN amounting forces close to South Ossetia. I’ll get a link if I can.

Here’s part of it I guess.

Has Mr.Saakashvili been doing too much of Vodka or is it a part of “this aggression mus NOT go unanswered” ?! 😮

So, Russia a former communist country with leaders like Stalin is your best friend. Well, more power to you………….Personally, I take pride in our friends from the UK, Australia, Canada, France, Poland, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Italy, Jordan, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

Scooter , it seems that you are too deeply rooted in the past and refuse to move on , and keep viewing everything thing in the present from a prism of the not so great past ….

If India were to think like that , we would never be “friends” with either the US or UK ,, the so called Democratic & free countries …

US because , they were the creators of this monster called “mujahideen” and propping up OBL and the Taliban … well ,, these very same “freedom fighters” and “jihadis” have been causing mayhem in India from About 2 DECADES and have cost innumerable innocent lives & untold suffering … and believe me , the human lives lost tally is much more thn 9/11 FYI . ..

UK , for “colonising” the nation if India for about a century … and playing a good enough role to ensure that India was partitioned when it got freedom ..

However , it isnt so … we ARE on good working relations with both the powers …

Yet, feel free to brag up India’s great relationship with Russia. Man did you ever think maybe Russia was playing India against the West during the Cold War????

you yourself arent sure if Russia was playing India against the west or not ,, by the usage of the underlined word.
then how do you convince you own self that Russia indeed HAD played India against the west.

Really, the only thing I don’t get about India. Is how a democratic and free goverment. Looks the other way when its supposed friend crushes the rights of other…….Russia has always used India for its own gain.

the “democratic and free government” of India is for its OWN people, and will look after the interests of the Indian people and the nation….
We have no interest in using our democracy or our freedom values to protect or support fool hardy misadventures of Mr.Saakashvili

Sorry, I am not going to debate your rewrite of history as it would be a waste of time! Also, while India is not directly relate to the conflict between Russia and Georgia (or should I say the US). India close friendship with Russia could effect its expanded relationships with the US, NATO, and Eastern Europe to name a few…………..Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised to see India to begin to distances itself more and more from Russia as time goes on. Especially, if Russia continues its evil ways toward Eastern European Countries and former Soviet Republics like Georgia.

if you might have followed Indian policy statements over the years , they always have been propounding a “multi-polar” world ,, a view shared by many other countries … so you have to look at Indias relationship with Russia , China in that context .. The American “your with us or against us” will never work with India … like i’d said before ,, India would infact be forced to move away if such a decision were ever to be thrusted upon us …..

Personally, I wonder how Russia’s invasion of Georgia will impact the already strained relationship with India??? Especially, considering India has moved much closer to the West in recents years.

Looks like one more nail in the coffin for Russia in the MMRCA Contest!

Well, the Russian “Invasion” of Georgia doesn’t quite have any significant geo-strategic/political implications on India.
and to think that because of this conflict , India would “move away” from Russia is quite naive !!

and as far as the MMRCA is concerned , i believe that MIG would still be a “real” contender compared to aircraft from the “WEST” , where India is supposedly moving much closer … with the ‘cannot sell LCA to other countries w/o US approval’ diktat,i guess its quite easy to determine the contenders who would claim the “nail in the coffin” award . . ! 😮

    Talking of Russia and India

India Russia Billion Dollar Helicopter Deal To Be Signed Soon

    File photo: Mi-171 helicopter
    by Staff Writers
Delhi, India (RIA Novosti) Aug 14, 2008
The Indian Air Force said on Thursday that India will soon sign a contract with Russia to receive 80 Mi-17 Hip-H multirole helicopters.

Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major said preparations for signing the contract are now in their final stages. The deal is estimated at $1 billion.

Indian media earlier reported that the contract was under threat over Russia’s attempt to significantly raise the delivery price, and that negotiations were stalling.

A preliminary agreement to sell Mi-17 helicopters to India was reached in March 2007 at a meeting of the Russian-Indian intergovernmental commission on military cooperation.

The Mi-17 is a version of the Mi-8 airframe. The helicopter has a takeoff weight of 13 metric tons and can carry up to 36 people or a payload of 4 metric tons within the cargo compartment, or 4.5 tons externally. The helicopters have been supplied to 80 countries.

Russia’s recent attempt a jacking up prices hasn’t quite found favor with the Indian establishment.Be it the reported raise in prices of the choppers or the Admiral Gorshkov fiasco …. that **may** put future Russian defence contracts with India in jeopardy, however to think that India might move away from Russia ,, its just not feasible for India.

With her military comprising about upwards of 60 to 70% Russian hardware, India wouldn’t be in a mood to antagonize Russia, even if it comes at a cost of staying away from the US ! 😮

Ukraine says it reserves right to bar Russian navy

    The Associated Press
    Sunday, August 10, 2008; 6:26 AM

KIEV, Ukraine — Ukraine warned Russia on Sunday it could bar Russian navy ships from returning to their base in the Crimea because of their deployment to Georgia’s coast.

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said the deployment of a Russian naval squadron to Georgia’s Black sea coast has the potential of drawing Ukraine into the conflict.

“In order to prevent the circumstances in which Ukraine could be drawn into a military conflict … Ukraine reserves the right to bar ships which may take part in these actions from returning to the Ukrainian territory until the conflict is solved,” said the statement which was posted on the ministry’s Web site.

Both Ukraine and Georgia have sought to free themselves of Russia’s influence, integrate into the West and join NATO.

The statement reflected a strong Ukrainian support for Georgia and is certain to anger Moscow, further straining Russian-Ukrainian relations.

Russia’s deputy chief of General Staff Col.-Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn said Sunday he was aware of the statement, but added that the Russian government must analyze it before making comment.

“It makes a third party involved, and it’s quite unexpected,” Nogovitsyn said said at a news conference.

A 1997 agreement between Russia and Ukraine lets the Black Sea Fleet remain in Sevastopol through 2017, but Ukrainian officials have said they want it out after that. The issue adds to emotions over Crimea, which was part of the Russian Federation but ceded to Ukraine during the Soviet era and became part of the independent Ukraine when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.

also read this bit of news on CNN International’s news bar on TV …

However with reports of Georgia backing down, i guess the situation would be contained, else it might have got Ukraine in the mess too ! 😮

The US has agreed to lease Steven Seagal for special ops, and Steven Chuck Norris for special special ops.
That has raised the cost of the deal to the current amounts.

But the Chuck Norris option will allow chaff and flares expenses to be reduced, as any missile approaching the plane will self destruct out of fear.

Steven Seagal .. hmm … then the package is worth it …..

too bad Sylvester Stallone is busy in Afghanistan and bordering areas ,,,, he would have come in handy too !!

Its definitely a case for concern unless the IAF sanitizes everything. If they do that, then its ok but they lose out on free and frank interaction with the other worldclass AFs whom the IAF is not going to engage in conflict with.

so you were there at the seminar ?? how can you say for sure what was discussed and NOT discussed ???

Is that behavior limited to ‘defence journos’ in India?
It seems, that HAL has a problem with its public relations management at least.

the article in question is coming from a so called “defence journo” who says

    —–>>

A new, more powerful engine such as the GE 414 (which powers the F-16 Super Hornet), whose core is the same as the GE 404 but is heavier or a similar engine, may have to be tried.

    linky

Well it is not in my interest to dump LCA, but dump the people involved in development for the last quarter of century and bring in new fresh talent.

why dont you provide your services to the GoI and HAL/ADA ,,,

i am pretty sure ,, that with the services of a visionary and aerospace expert like you ,,,, they ought to start churning out Raptor equivalents ,,,,

MY GOD!!! Even after all this time some idiot will always raise his head to talk trash about 30 yrs. no direction, assistance needed blah blah blah
Even more unbelievable is that there are always new goats around who will entertain these posters.
Give it a rest gentlemen. It’s not worth talking to someone who has obviously not even done an iota of research on the project.

replying to a person who has misconceptions .. or is deliberately trolling makes them “goats” …. wow ,,,

(( btw this is coming from an old goat ))
