I’m on a roll now!
Some older what-ifs:
Su-15Sh attack derivative.
jtms: the J-10 is obviously using the same source image as the Lavi, but not the actual lavi jpeg we are looking at, which isn’t scanned very well.
The artist probably scanned it direct.
When you overlay the images in photoshop, and break the Lavi as I say, it matches COMPLETELY in the canopy/front fuselage, engine section etc. Thats why I did them different colours- you can get them to overlay perfectly. My wing wasn’t quite right but you get the idea, surely?
This is the derived SSBJ, which might represent a later iteration.
7.01 layout
Here’s some 7.01 images… the first one was said to be T-60S but is almost identical to the 7.01.
1) and 2) – structural modification of leading edges
6) Frequency selective materials for radome and other apertures
7) RAM inside intakes
8) Metallic canopy treatment
9) RAM on main reflectors
10) and 11) RAM on leading/trailing edges
12) plasma generator (for radar)
13) Intake duct partition
14) Intake bay lattice structure
15) RAM treated compressor blades
Well, Mikoyan certainly worked with the tailless delta planform.
First, there was the MiG-21I (tested the Tu-144 wing) which was seriously considered for production. Later on, the early MiG-27 27-11 study used a similar layout. Following that, the third MiG-31 configuration study and one MiG-29 study used a tailless ogival delta wing. This configuration is/was considered ‘sensitive’ due to its further development during work on the 1.42 and 7.01 projects.
Here you go- 2 minutes with photoshop.
If you break the Lavi nose, extend it and droop it a little, it matches fine.
Then cut the Lavi behind the canopy and move the rear section back a bit creating a gap, and the centre fuselage matches.
Cut off the wings and deform them, they make a pretty good starting point.
You’ve got a fair amount of work still to do, but its not more than a days work.
The Kh-31s can be stolen from another cutaway…
Getting back to topic…
I’ll post a “photoshop” proof that the J-10B pic is a minimum change photoshop job shortly, after I finish making it 😉
“AVIOGRAPHICA” is Mike Badrocke.
Thus, the Lavi pic is by Mike Badrocke.
By your reckoning, then, Mike Badrocke then drew a picture of the J-10B, supplied it to a Chinese aviation forum having forgotten to sign it?
Bullcrap 🙂
Erm:
Possibility 1: An unknown artist produces a detailed cutaway of a secret Chinese plane, J-10B, which hasn’t ever been seen in public, presumably after stealing the plans from Chengdu. Somehow, sections of it look exactly like a Lavi, not like the single seat J-10 already seen, including a boom-type refuelling system completely incompatible with existing Chinese infrastructure.
Possibility 2: An artist fakes a detailed cutaway of a secret Chinese plane, J-10B, using an existing Lavi cutaway altered to look like a J-10. Many details remain incorrect.
I vote for 2.
End of discussion 😉
But why would a reputable artist create a cutaway of the J-10 by redrawing his Lavi picture, despite photographic evidence that show it to be wrong? And why J-10B, which we’ve never seen a pic of til now (maybe)?
