However, one should note that Brian’s cockpit shot shows the placard that I translate as ‘Sack landings are forbidden’. 😀

Are those the type after which you’re sacked by the chief pilot?

You’ll have to change the entire oil system to get an engine to work inverted and probably the cooling system as well. That’s a lot of work, you’re basically redesigning the entire engine block.

You sure about that? The 2de Maasvlakte near Rotterdam is I believe still in the process of being reclaimed? Or has the reclamation already finished? I lost track on that project. Other then that I don’t think there are any projects going on. Lots of ambitious plans though.

Strictly speaking that’s a different story. In a polder you build a dike and then drain the water from it. If there’s a wreck inside the polder it will emerge. The Maasvlakte is built differently as they add soil to raise the land until it is above sea level. If there are any aircraft wrecks there you won’t find them as effectively you’re burying them deeper underground.

Here’s what you saw then. It is the real MK959 just after replacement following a refurbishment. The gear was fixed a few days later.

Anyone else got tales of aircraft engines being used for other purposes?

You mean this sort of stuff:http://gizmodo.com/5090397/10-gadgets-that-have-no-business-using-a-jet-engine :D:D:eek:

Books will be your best bet I’m guessing. If that fails try to get in touch with the Brooklands Museum, they could have some images in their archives.

What sort of state is that poor B26 in????????????????

Doesn’t seem to be that much worse than when I saw it in 2002. What they said then was that planes are rotated through restoration, it will get some attention in due course but as it is a larger airframe it might take a while before enough space opens up. There is enough work around those hangars to keep a whole company busy, this is just the tip of the iceberg! Great place though 🙂

Yes, I don’t know which versions but the Ercoupe was designed with a coupled rudder/aileron control which made it ‘easier to fly’. If you look in the cockpit of one you will see only one pedal which is the brake. Many have either been retrofitted or built with full controls as crosswind landings can be ‘interesting’ with the rudder-pedalless version.

    Edit: see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:1946_Ercoupe_Advertisment_in_Skyways.JPG

The Vanguard is run up on occasion, as far as possible it is a live aircraft still. There are other aircraft at Brooklands capable of running but I’m not sure which are run these days. Back when I was a more frequent visitor it would be the Sopwith Camel, but that has had some engine trouble since, the Demoiselle and the Bleriot. There may be others.

…I questioned copyright & was – understandably – told that anything on the net is free….

Next time you encounter this, please explain to the person in question that this is absolute bollox. Unless specifically stated that the image is released in the public domain, under some form of fair use or other license, copyright still applies. As Mondariz states people often save images for their own use, but if they do anything else with it except looking at the image on their own monitor then they are crossing a line.

My approach would be not to sign such a ‘print’.

Website is not down and text is Dutch and English. E-mail: office@skhv.nl

    Hi Arjan,

Thanks for the addition, the website wouldn’t load when I tried it, I knew the address was right so figured it would be something temporary. Good thing that there’s an English section on the site now.

    FXST,

Thanks for that, the history of the aircraft as it is known now does include a couple of strange stories, I guess this fits in quite well. Coert knows more about that, he’ll turn up here eventually I guess. Do you have any more background info perhaps, where was the aircraft based? With which unit? What timeframe was this?

The B-25 is part of the Royal Netherlands Air Force Historical Flight, which has a website here: http://www.skhv.nl Last time I checked it was all in Dutch, but you should be able to find an e-mail address on there.

Actually, I’ve just checked and the website seems to be down.

    Hi Coert

Is this the same B25 that was at Shoreham airshow a couple of weeks ago?

    Mark

    Indeed that is the one.

FXST, could you tell a bit more about that photo? You mention on the page that it came back from a special ‘mission’ when that photo was taken, could you let us in on the secret? 😉

Allright, that confirms David Legg’s theory about the gun-running then. Any more from him on this aircraft?
