aren’t you jumping the gun a bit?….there’s no mention of scrapping them yet…
In a way I am, but I’m also being realistic. From the circumstances I’m guessing that they will want to be rid of the aircraft before the new building opens, and I’ve seen how long it took before the Trident at Heathrow had found a new home. I don’t see an immediate solution jumping up for five airliners of that size. Also I’ve got a suspicion that they will not be in a great state corrosionwise, meaning that they would need a lot of work before they can survive another few years. With those set of circumstances, scrapping seems to me to be a real threat.
Could they not repaint the vc10 into a transport command scheme?
Obviously, yes they could do that. But it would not be correct for that version. The significance of the VC10 at Cosford is that it is the last remaining civil Standard VC10 in an airliner guise. Once we scrap that we’re never getting that back.
The Comet is in a similar position, but apparently nobody is doubting that this airframe should be saved. So why then scrap the VC10? The Trident is a Trident 1 I think, similarly scarce. So why scrap that one then? Same goes for the Viscount, also an early model. The 707 is Conway powered, rare variant that was produced specifically for BOAC, probably also a single or rare survivor. And even without the individual merits, having those aircraft on the same location makes it a priceless collection!
I need to go and type an e-mail to BA and the RAFM me thinks… 😡
Would it be possible to get a ‘sanitized’ version of the thread back? There were some interesting posts in it.
Hmm, seems that we’re all suffering from the same temporary blindness. On the other hand, until we can get a clarification from someone it wouldn’t be sensible to go on debating about it.
(XL391, I am curious as to the contents of that reply. PM? Otherwise you could post it here if you want.)
I have read somewhere, that it is better to do the sharpening with the image in greyscale – but I’ve yet to work out how to do that, and reapply the colours afterwards. 🙁
Not sure if this is what you mean, but it’s a trick I’ve picked up somewhere:
Open image.
Convert image to ‘Lab colors’ (Image – Mode – Lab colors).
Go to the channels tab and select the ‘lightness’ channel.
Now apply sharpening as needed.
Set image to RGB again (Image – Mode – RGB colors).
Re-save with different filename.
Enjoy!
Perhaps it is useful to add a link to a thread with preserved Harrier photos: click here
Any info on how the scheme will be completed?
It won’t.
(See previous thread about this aircraft here 😉 )
7 & 8. Ryan STM (which do you prefer, colour or B&W)
I like the B&W version, but had a bit of a play with the levels and contrast as I found your version a bit ‘flat’. It is no big difference, but B&W happens to be something that digital photography is not all that good at 😉
I don’t know what to say.
I have not seen many of his displays, but just his name is so well known for all the effort he put into the warbird scene that his passing feels like an enormous loss. I too had the impression that he would grace our skies for many years to come.
Blue skies forever. 🙁
Does it come with all the ‘accessories’ shown in the photos? 😀
A few of mine then to add to the collection. The green one used to be a flyer when she came to Holland, but was retired after an engine fire caused damage to the nacelle. She is now in a museum in Best with two other Daks.
In the photo of the taxiing Mustang there’s a grey/red Dakota in the background. The photo was taken at Eindhoven in the late 90’s but I seem to remember that the Dak was Belgium based. Anybody who knows more?
If you want TSR-2 fuselage bits, have a look around at Brooklands. A few years back all the concrete formers that were used to create the fuselage skins were still lying beneath the bushes where they were dumped all those years ago.
Anyway, it’s a nice thought but it took billions to build them in the first place. To recreate one will probably take the same amount (more or less).
For some inspiration, a guy in Canada once built a full size CF-105 Arrow replica. It might be worth a Google to see how long it took to build that!
Two shots I took at Old Warden earlier this year.
Once again I’m on the wrong side of the North Sea….. so I won’t be going. But who will attend? Aside from the regulars 😉 (Hi GASYD! )
N1324, that only works if you are registered and logged in. Otherwise you cannot see the photos. I’ve taken the plunge and got myself registered so here are the images in question. Copyright XXChrisXX. (Hope he doesn’t mind me reposting them here)
