This is the GeeBee replica that is now in Kermit Weeks’ Fantasy of Flight museum. Photo taken by me in 2002.

Yep, that’s the one (movie that is). I was going to say that I’ve also seen this Lisunov in Aeroplane Monthly a while ago. I haven’t got a clue which one it was though but I might have a quick look one of these days. I’ll scan the photos if I find it.

Edit: Looks like I started this message about four or five postings ago! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ My work must be getting in the way again ๐Ÿ˜‰

I personally would also like to see a Vickers Wellington return to the air. I dont know much about how the aircraft was built other than that it is of geodetic construction, but I would think it would be one of the simpler aircraft to replicate as it would only require a few shapes/types of metal to be formed and then bolted/riveted together.

I don’t know if it would be that easy. The structure of the Wellington consists of tubing that is specially formed. Creating large batches of this to airworthy specifications will not be a simple task. The best place to ask is at the Brooklands Museum as they created some of that stuff to restore R for Robert to its current state. It would be an interesting task though!

Nice shots! Looks like either a big lens or good positioning!

Just curious about one of the P-40s: can someone with more P-40 knowledge than me explain why the canopy of the aircraft in RAF colours (TL-C) looks odd to me?

For those who missed it live, here is a short movie by one of the participants that really captures the event!

    Warnings:
    – Broadband or patience needed (approx 22 Mb)
    – May cause unbearable urges to fly! ๐Ÿ˜€
    – May also cause non-pilots to steer clear of aviation! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Anyway, I think it’s a must see: http://www.atcbox.com/Downloads/Movies/Aerobatics/RedBull_Airrace_2004_Budapest.wmv

Edit: for more info about the pilot and more video’s see his website: http://www.aerobatics.nl

Load the images in Photoshop, choose ‘images’, ‘image size’ from the menu. Now set the longest side to 800 pixels. If it is already smaller leave it as it is. If you changed the size, save the image under a new filename (‘File’ and ‘save as’) (spitfireP7350_resize.jpg for example) and choose quality 4 or 5 from the next window.

Then upload the resized images to the forum as you’ve been doing.

Not trying to tell granny…. etc, just trying to help as they look like great photos! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hi Vicky Ten! As far as I know it still carries those names, this is XR807 “Donald Garland VC and Thomas Grey VC”. The aircraft is still in regular squadron service with 10 Sqn but appears to be a bit camera shy as I haven’t got a photo of her on my site.

The reason for the double name is evident when you read this summary of the citation:

Flying Officer Donald Garland VC and Sergeant Thomas Gray VC, Royal Air Force

Flying Officer Garland was the Pilot and Sergeant Gray was the Observer of the leading aircraft of a formation of 5 aircraft that attacked a bridge over the Albert Canal which had not been destroyed and was allowing the enemy to advance into Belgium. All the aircrews of the Squadron concerned volunteered for the operation and, after 5 crews had been selected by drawing lots, the attack was delivered at low altitude against this vital target. Orders were issued that this bridge was to be destroyed at all costs. As had been expected, exceptionally intense machine gun and anti aircraft fire were encountered. Moreover, the bridge area was heavily protected by enemy fighters. In spite of this, the formation successfully delivered a dive bombing attack from the lowest practicable altitude. British fighters in the vicinity reported that the target was obscured by the bombs bursting on it and near it. Only one of the 5 aircraft returned from this mission. The pilot of this aircraft report that besides being subject to extremely heavy anti-aircraft fire, through which they dived to attack the objective, our aircraft were also attacked by a large number of enemy fighters after they had released their bombs on the target. Much of the success of this vital operation must be attributed to the Formation Leader, Flying Officer Garland, and to the coolness and resource of Sergeant Gray, who in the most difficult conditions, navigated Flying Officer Garlandโ€™s aircraft in such a manner that the whole formation was able successfully to attack the target in spite of subsequent heavy losses. Flying Officer Garland and Sergeant Gray did not return.

The aircraft is shown on these photos:

    I didn’t know that, what a nice tribute. ๐Ÿ™‚

All the 10 Sqn VC10s are named after VC holders, have a look here for the full list: http://www.vc10.net/History/RAFVC10s.html#VC10names

They will not be forgotten. RAF’s 10 squadron still flies two VC10s, XV102 and XR810, named after them.

4 & 5 – This is what happens when you let 2 Squadron have too much free time…

Looks suspiciously like the remnants of a Beech Baron 55 that’s had a very bad day! Although I must say that the car that’s crushed beneath it may have some issues too ๐Ÿ˜€

As for the real thing, the best I’ve got is this shot taken during landing at La Ferte. Sad really as I was airside the whole weekend and should’ve taken a lot more photos of it!
