Found this one in my photo collection recently, taken at La Ferte in 1993. The second shot is Zoersel in 1991, can anyone verify if its the same Buchon?
I’m not sure I would want to be flying over Florida right now, with Iwan coming up. I have spent some 160 flying hours there though, great place!
And this was when the 26 still had the very nice Korean era colors. They were so much nicer than the current one.
Another one from Zoersel, 1991. And La Ferte in 1993, is she still in these colours then?
Wonder how pleased the Utterly Butterly company would be to know that I and many I know referred to the current team as ‘the Crunchies’ for quite a while after the sponsorship had changed…!
Same here! I met and saw them a few times at airshows around ’93/’94 and always referred to them as the Crunchies since. I guess I will have to change that!
One of the guys on the DBAF team then had a bit of a crush on one of said crunchies, but he crashed… 😀
I did some thinking and came to the conclusion that the first warbird I ever saw flying was probably the DBAF B-25. The photo below is the first time I visited the DBAF, I think it was in 1990, and just as I was about to leave they pulled the aircraft out of the hangar for an engine test, providing me with this shot. I think I first saw her flying a few weeks later.
Next one is the first time I ever flew in her: 1993 going to the La Ferte Airshow. And no, I won’t post the photo that shows me grinning like a fool!
Third shot is the SHF Invader, taken at Zoersel (Belgium) in 1991 I think.`
Edit: rescanned and reuploaded second photo, quality now acceptable! 😉
Sad news that! I spent six months at the Pan Am Flight Academy in 2002 and know the field well. I hope that some of the Albatross bits can be salvaged!
This is one of their aircraft:
Sorry about the Piper that’s in the way!
I think the first warbirds I saw were those owned by the Duke of Brabant Air Force in 1994, which at that time were the B-25, A-26 and P-51. (I think the A-26 belonged to them)
The A-26 was probably the one from the Scandinavian Historic Flight. The DBAF never owned an A-26 or P-51 although they ‘borrowed’ a Mustang from Sweden a few times during those years. In 1993 or 1994 it flew for a short while in Dutch East Indies colours, I’ve posted photos of her like that in another thread a long time ago. It may also have been ‘Damn Yankee’ which is based at Lelystad.
First warbird I ever saw? Good question as I really cannot remember!!
Mr. Roundy’s own site is here: http://www.starliner.net , the story of the ferry flight to Polk City that I was referring to on the Sunderland thread is on the ‘Starliner News’ page.
Great photos Mark!
Some offerings from me: C-FIZO at EHEH a long time ago, this Cat is now safely in a museum here: http://www.luftfart.museum.no/Engelsk/Exhibitions/PBY-5A.htm
The second two are of the recently restored Dutch Cat, showing the scheme in which she originally flew in The Netherlands (see Stieglitz’ post above for its current colours).
…Hope this helps
Cheers Crazymainer
Thanks for that Crazymainer! It is interesting to know a bit more about the background. I did know that the owner (the name escapes me now) has two more but didn’t know exactly how this one ended up at FoF. I do recall reading an account of the ferry to Polk City on the internet somewhere and if my memory works correctly I seem to remember some hydraulics issues on that trip too, coupled to a not too roomy grass runway it all sounded a bit hairy to me then. Still it is good to hear that progress has been made on her as I sure noticed some areas in need of restoration when I saw her in 2002!
Anyway, first lets hope that the latest hurricane passes over without problems!
Looks A-4ish to me.
Great collection there!
I’m guessing the XB-19 on the second shot, and I’m pretty sure no.5 is a Seversky P-35.
Over to the other experts now :p
TSR2 XR220 at Cosford on the last photo!
Hi Corsair, I think I got my T-6s mixed up. I was thinking of the ex-race number 89 ‘Boomer’ that was flown at Reno by the late Joe Hartung. It doesn’t seem to be the same one. When the only thing you can remember is that it was grey with a big number on the side which contained an ‘8’ then this one looks surprisingly similar all of a sudden
Hmm, Arthur beat me to it by a minute, better luck next time!!
