My memories are of working as an electrical engineer on vulcan XA 890 that was used for blind landing trials at RAE Bedford during the 60s. I sometimes flew in it around the airfield tweaking the blind landing equipment as the pilot made hands off approaches.
Sounds a bit hairy now but I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
In the pic I’m the dark haired guy at the ladder. Hair all gone now !!

Your camera must be better than mine!
I was there today (The 8th) It was a good show with all the old favourites but a bit restricted I thought. We saw flying aircraft from WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam etc. but no Canberra. I wish Duxford would put one in the air instead of hanging one on wires in the new hangar.
Anyway I had a good day and was able to crawl through the Catalina!

Hi 25 Deg South
The estimated depth of the scuttled Catalinas is about 120 ft with a hell of a lot of silt on the bottom

Aircraft in Irish loughs
I can confirm Hurrifan’s post that there are a number of aircraft in Lough Erne.
I used to watch them fly in and out as a child in the 1940s. There are at least 2 Sunderlands and a Catalina designated as war graves and a number of scuttled Catalinas. There is a dive planned for later this month to try to locate these.

Yes I looked at the link and I will be going to Duxford as I have many times before but do they have to charge so much for us veterans who, in the past, flew and serviced the aircraft they are displaying?
Paddy R
Thanks Jon for the info on XA 890. I can now bring my own records up to date.
Yes Deryck I remember Bob Westley at Thurliegh. I’m sure we shared a few trips around the airfield in the vulcan. The pilot was always Flt Lt “Pinky” Stark.
I’m sure Bob will remember him.

It has to be a Catalina . Take off and landing on water.
I’m still hoping !!

Thanks for the short pics Flyernzl but don’t forget the old Shetland

My earliest memory of an aircraft was paying 6 old pence to walk through a Catalina on Lough Erne Northern Ireland on a war effort fund raising scheme.
I was 7 years old and I have loved them ever since.

Hello Bex
Whats the latest on WH773?
Haven’t heard from you for a while
Have you done the Duxford trip or when is it planned?

Bristol Britannia colours
Knowing what i know of Laker (Mum is ex Laker and stopped flying to have me!) surely a DC10 in Skytrain colours would be more apt for the late Sir Freddie 😀
Well Jon
Your mum must have been one of the later Laker girls.
In my day it was 2 Britannias on charter work, DC4s and Avro Tudors freighting out of Stanstead and at Southend under Channel Air Bridge colours Bristol freighters flying passengers and cars to Rotterdam. You should have seen Stanstead in those days, only us and Dan Air flying old Yorks.
Great things have small beginnings!
Bristol Brit
Hello All
In 1959 I worked for the late great Freddy Laker on Bristol Britannias flying out of Stanstead. Freddy was the real driving force behind cheap charter flights for the masses. The company name was Aviation Traders.
It would be a fitting memorial if G-AOVF could be painted in those colours.

Sunderland 4036
Hi Darrell
I am a native of the area and am in contact with local WW2 aircraft historians.
We realise that 4036 is a war grave and thus deserves respect. I have been informed that the first dive will be to accurately locate the wreck and identify it.
I hope to be on site during the planned dive in September as I have a cottage nearby.
Let me know if I can help in any way with local contacts, info etc.

Hi Steve
Its me again.
My Lough Erne contacts tell me that W 4036 has been located before.
There is a local contact Seamus Gormley who has some scan printouts which he is willing to share with you. his phone number is 02866 342702.
The scuttled Catalinas were dived on by the Portstewart section of BSAC 2 years ago. They didn’t find them but they showed me some scans of the suspected area that showed a number of anomilies. Might be worth a contact.
Please let me know if I can help in any other way.

Hi Steve
Thought you might be interested in another Lough Erne war grave.
This memorial is at Castle Archdale. Killadeas was the Operational Training Unit nearby
