I thought stealth was the new road and speed did not matter.. 😉
You can have all the clear objectives they want but those are wholly unrealistic goals, even if they had a decade to work on it. The Mig-31 airframe is just not capable of that speed or altitude and the Russian’s history of engine tech leaves a lot to be desired.
Why MiG-31?
No, the back end is the same, the RBE2 AESA is plug and play, a 2 hour swap out with the PESA array. In other words, the performance gain is 100% attributed to the switch from PESA to AESA.
The way I understand it, the back-end can be the same.. which means you could swap the AESA and PESA arrays if you wanted to.. but the new RBE-2AA radars do not use the same processing technology as the old RBE2s, to get AESA you also need to replace the radar transmitter module and the first stage of signal reception..
Back in 2006 there was a large-scale upgrade of the radar in order to improve its detection range.. So, the increase in range is hardly due to AESA antenna only..

I don’t think Deino ever completely denied the Chinese Su-35 deal, he just remained skeptical, as he has every right to do so. China buying the Su-35 doesn’t seem to make sense to many people (myself included) and there very good reasons for this.
His skepticism towards the Su-35 deal was borderline excessive.. No way in hell could China EVER buy something as the Super Flanker, vis-Ã -vis the J-11D.. fact is we don’t even know the exact designation of the alleged AESA radar the J-11D is carrying, no one has ever seen a glimpse of the thing, but Deino already knows it’s so much more advanced than the obsolete Irbis.. and then he just loves to label those who disagree with these childish notions as fanboys..
Actually, the Su-35S deal makes much sense, Russians are still very knowledgeable in certain areas, but then one has to quit this primitive reasoning and open the eyes first..
Yeah, same here.. I, too, have healthy interest in pretty much anything, starting from Mirage III, through Su-27KUB, ending with J-20 or F-22A.. Granted, I have developed a soft spot on red star topics due to my vague knowledge of cyrillics, but if someone labels me a fanboy for no reason, he shall expect some fierce response..
lol…. Fighter “Generations” have typically had some feature or group of features that delineated & demanded a new number.
Having just “more” of existing features is not a new “Gen”, it’s just adding a plus sign to the existing one.
What have the current US proposals as a new feature so they dare to call them 6th Gen, then?

if the J-11D is an improved clone of the MKK, why did they do away with the square tipped fins?
A good question, indeed.. But given the fact that Chinese have been redoing most of the structures with composites, the question would be: regardless of the tip, are their own newly produced fins wet or dry?
Indeed funny that just again one of the usual suspects who derails each and every thread with his own expertise, spreading Russian fan-boyism off-topic whenever is not able to accept a kind reminder to stay on topic?!
This is the sole and primary reason why we all come to forums like this.. to spread our own opinions and expertise.. don’t you think for a second that your own fanboyism is less apparent than mine.. or anyone else’s..
By the way … just a reminder, if I’m posting here and it’s rare enough since this forum is more a Kindergarten than a discussion group I’m just posting images and news, not even opinions, but you surely know better.
Sure.. no one remembers your agenda regd. the allegedly impossible sale of Su-35S to China.. and even less we do remember your injured rant after it was found out that the sale, indeed, has materialized.. everyone here is just a fanboy but you alone are an epitome of objectivity..
.. most likely South African, made by Denel, if you ask me..
I guess so.. it obviously doesn’t even seem to have a HUD.. but this is a later era aircraft, I guess it could have some CRT displays like MiG-29M or Su-35 once had..
For that they already have Su-34 and Su-30SM.. even Su-35S.. I don’t think the S.37 would bring anything decisively new on the table.. But I’ll be happy to get corrected if you think otherwise..
It would be an utterly obsolete concept today.. no reason to cry over spilled milk..
But I would love to see the cockpit of that machine..
