…though ironically, the narrator then continued to talk all over the engine sounds anyway…how maddening is it to have a good little series about airshows with some cracking footage, burdened with this dreadful script and narration style. 😡
Again, great footage mired by a shocking script/narration style. Felt quite upset watching the RAF’s footage of a burning PA474 landing and her crew leaping out in all directions as she sat there smouldering!
I don’t think there’s any argument about it- ‘607 is easily the most important remaining Vulcan- ‘558 having been the flyer to date makes no difference whatsoever in my eyes.
Thanks for the reply Tony. It’s something on those lines, yes- but what we really need is a look at the appropriate schematic from a Gnat. Anyone?
Absolutely delighted that the Lanc is back in the air, after missing her first season since (I think) 1978? Must admit I thought they’d have had her back for the unveiling of the Bomber Command Memorial, but they work enough miracles so I don’t want to sound picky. Cracking job by all concerned.
Not fussed on the idea of it flying with the Reds though- a bit of superficial ‘Ooh’ and ‘Ahh’ aside, anything flying with the Reds doesn’t really mean anything for me.
Am I missing the point to all this? The drawing clearly means 7swg, i.e the gauge of the required material. So?
I still hope to see Hendon’s S-Sugar ‘back in the air’ in a figurative sense at least by having PA474 wear her scheme; I guess other, non-surviving 100-op airframes will get a priority, but there’s something nice about the idea of such an old warrior being honoured in the air, and there could be plenty of mutual publicity between Hendon and the BBMF.
BBMF were saying that they were aiming for the 21st for the Lanc to be completed, so it must be any day now..? Thinking about it, isn’t this the first time she’s missed a flying season since the 1978 layup for corrosion problems?
It’s been a while, but here’s our latest diary update-
Thanks for the link to the engine at RT&A, interesting stuff.
Re the paint scheme, I think that while the other roles the Lanc filled were of course also important and worthy, the sheer weight of history of the Bomber Command service dictates that PA474 should always be painted as a bomber.
Here’s the exact details-
Work on rebuilding the Lancaster’s No 4 engine nacelle, after the in-flight fire it suffered on 7th May, was progressing well. The rear sub-frame, the new firewall and the engine bearer are now all re-fitted, along with new electrical wiring, the radiator and oil cooler, and other ancillary equipment. The next job is the trial fit of the new cowling rails and engine cowling panels. Unfortunately, the need to focus the limited BBMF engineering manpower on the rectification of the other aircraft has meant that work on the Lancaster has been interrupted. No date has been set for the Lancaster’s return to flight. It is still hoped that the bomber will fly again before the display season ends, although there is now less confidence about a return to the air by mid-September.
The latest BBMF Club newsletter however states that work on the Lanc has slipped a bit, and though they still hope to have her back in the air for the end of this season, mid-September is now looking unlikely.
Sold!
Thanks for the reply Pete. Unfortunately I don’t have access to the item in person to check out the fixings on it, and the only other image I have is this-

So looks like Varsity Nose wheels might be the answer, if you really need wheels to be absolute originals.
Cheers for the help, Bill. It was just curiosity to start with- we knew they were of aircraft origin so I thought I’d ask, but of course, once you start looking into these things, the bug strikes! It would be fabulous of course to use the right wheels on the new trailer, so even if there was a single Varsity wheel out there that we could use as a pattern, that would be great. Here’s hoping!

I’ve had this running as a query in another thread, but guess it won’t hurt to add to this list-
WANTED! One Vickers Varsity nose wheel, for purchase or to borrow for pattern making purposes. (Or, four of them if anyone has them!)
Cheers!
