RE: New Lancaster Video
Glad to hear that the night runs will be featured too-my own post about this video is currently down on page 4 of this forum!
RE: Queen mother funeral flypast
She’s already worn the AJ-G codes! Though without the underside mods, of course. The cost would be MASSIVE-this is the aircraft that still hasn’t got any form of power operation for it’s turrets, or the much talked about H2S blister yet! They used to talk about a fibreglass bomb load, too. Oh well…
Codes ‘474 has worn since being a display aircraft are-
KM-B
AJ-G
SR-D
PM-M2
WS-J
QR-M
Doesn’t seem like many put like that, does it?!
RE: Queen mother funeral flypast
It would be nice to see ‘474 painted up as a less ‘famous’ Lanc for a change, they always seem to go for quite well known, high scoring Lancs. Having said that, I think this is one of the best coats of paint she’s ever worn.
One I’d LOVE to see, though I don’t know if they’d ever do it as the real one still exists, would be to fly her as a Hendon’s ‘Sugar’-famous, distinctive, a good tribute to the exisiting plane etc; any one else have a scheme they’d like to see the Lanc carry?
RE: Yorkshire Air museum
Go to Hendon instead-more bombers to see, and they’re real ones, too!
RE: BBMF Lanc Flypast
Check if they have a new pilot caled Gibson-that might answer everything!!!
Try ringing the BBMF directly though-I should think their participation list is long printed by now, and it’s just the website which is behind.
RE: S-Sugar-Going Up!
Yes, I remember the projected clouds backdrop and the silly screens it played on; all very daft, it created no illusion at all, what with all the other aircraft in such close proximity. Come on Hendon, get the bird of the perch!
RE: Wheres it gone?
No, I’ve not seen that bare patch-perhaps it’s a new repair? Whereabouts is it?
RE: Display boards
The thing is, my wife could be considered as a ‘general tourist’, and she thought the info boards were poor too!
I agree that the ‘Our Finest Hour’ presentation is superb though, I’d love to see something like that set up in the Bomber Hall if they could too. And yes, the Sunderland is brilliant-I could hang around in there all day! It’s a shame you can’t see more of the upper deck area, as I had the pleasure to do in the years before it was opened to the public, as the radio area and flight deck are brilliant, too.
The lighting IS very dark in the BoB hall now though-half of them appeared to be simply switched off-I wasn’t sure if it was to do with the ‘Finest Hour’ thing, or to do with keeping the electric bill down a bit!!!
RE: Wheres it gone?
I beleive the H2S is correct for Sugar-she was around so long, almost starting life as a Manchester and lasting the whole war-that she must have had everything and the kitchen sink fitted at one point!
I never got what they were trying to achieve with the tail-up thing-are we supposed to think that this tightly-hemmed into a building bomber is landing, or what? With it’s bomb doors open and all that, of course…
It’s just not the same without that Beverley outside, either-though I suppose the ‘plastic’ fighters will be moved too, once the new building starts going up.
RE: New NX611 Video
I’m not sure if you can pre-order, or if there’s even a need to, but you’ll find them at http://www.ptvideo.com Any Lanc fans who haven’t already done so should get a copy of ‘Operation Lancaster’ too, it’s a cracker!
RE: Display boards
There should definitely be more information about the particular aircraft on display at Hendon, rather than just basic type info.
Also, the last time I went was with my wife, who’d never been before-the first thing she said about the boards was that they should have photos of the inside of the planes on, and I thought that was a brilliant idea-how about you guys?
Don’t get me wrong, I love the place, but for all their claims of making the place more up to date and ‘interactive’, it’s taking a hell of a long time for any real changes to present themselves! One sit-in Jet Provast, a walk-through Sunderland and a fair-ground style Tornado ‘simulator’ don’t ammount to a lot of ‘interactivity’ for a day out, do they? How about a hands on Spit control grip/panel, or even a sit-in fuselage section?
RE: Wheres it gone?
The port elevator on Sugar was missing when I last saw her in October, too-unusally there was nobody about to ask about it at the time though. I can’t think why it would have had to come off, unless perhaps something got dropped onto it at some point? Anyone know a definite answer to this one?
That poor plane, she looks bloody stupid with her tail up on that plinth-by pure chance I was there the day they craned her up onto it, and I told Dr Fopp as much, but he didn’t seem to interested…shame.
RE: Hendon chaos
When I went last year the place seemed fine but of course, Hendon is always changing and even more so now that the new building is due next year. I agree though that their info boards have always been rather lacking!
RE: Caption competition
‘Quick, look the other way, it’s Roy Pullan’
RE: Lancaster 60th
True, the more famous types do tend to get more recognition than other equally-deserving aircraft. Well, if it’s any consolation, when I own my own Lanc, you’re very welcome to formate your Mossie with it mate!:-)
