The SR.A1 flying boat is being suggested- and it is where Campbell got his earlier Beryl engine-anyone got a cutaway drawing of the type please?
We’re way ahead of you here- the system was not developed by Donald Campbell- we’re just looking for the usual application for the system, so we can go and rob parts!
Thanks guys, but we’re definitely looking for something with the on-board air start system- with two spherical air bottles about a foot in diameter- in conjunction with something Orpheus-sized, not just anything that was Orpheus powered.
Keep guessing everyone!
Cheers Bruce- info and possible help is already coming from them- we’re just networking for any other leads in the meantime.
Okay, we now know that this is definitely part of the Vulcan’s rapid air start system, and the bit we really need- the pressure reg valve- is located above engine No.1 (I think it was)
So, any leads on any spare units..?
Any idea what it takes to sign up on their forum? Tried this morning and still haven’t received an activation email, despite requesting one a second time.
Details of the valve we’re after now in the Bluebird thread, cheers!

Help!
We’re looking for info and hopefully replacement parts for an air valve that came from Bluebird’s air start system. We’ve been told that these Lucas Rotax valves were fitted in Vulcans, though a first search in one today proved fruitless.
So we’re looking for clues about where to find one, RAF part No’s, anything that would help us really. Here’s some pics of the valve as recovered- the last shot is of the pressure regulating valve, which we think is a Lucas Rotax part also-
Just want to offer thanks on behalf of The Bluebird Project to the guys at the NEAM today, in particular ‘Sven’, for their generous assistance in our quest for a replacement air valve for Bluebird of a type which we’ve been told was also fitted to Vulcans. Bill got to crawl around XL319’s innards to his heart’s content, for which we are very grateful- we’ll do some more research guys, and we’ll be back!
Thank you!
That never seems to worry them down at Hendon…
Good programme, but way, way too short- you felt there was a much fuller docu in there somewhere.
He was on Radio 2 the other day and mentioned this- said he got to fly in a Lanc. Wasn’t sure which one he meant, but it sounded like it was the BBMF one?
No worries, ’tis all interesting stuff anyway. Us boys on the BBP will have a steep learning curve re. all things Fleet Air Arm!
For anyone who might not follow our ‘picture of the day’, I thought some folk here might appreciate a look at the current state of build on Bluebird, as seen last week-
From memory, the two fighters arrived and displayed, then the Dak came in solo a little later on in the PM.
