Didn’t I once read that there was a plan to get the Lanc’s turrets moving on an individual air bottle system, if not via the actual hydraulics?
I understand that there are cost and increased maintenance concerns here, but think how amazing it would look to see powered turrets on the Lanc again!
🙂
Somewhere on the wall in the gloom in there must be some lightswitches…I’ll find ’em one day…
Wow, what a find, and what an image of it!
I’m already drooling due to partaking of an afternoon beveridge or two, but now I’m REALLY drooling!!! 😀
Of less interest to us aircraft nuts here perhaps, but DR also wrote ‘Kramer’s War’, about the German occupation of Jersey. He sent me a copy free when I bought my signed 1st ed hardback of POC from him years ago!
Had ‘Damned Good Show’ for Crimbo, not bad, not bad at all, some of his best characterisation work since POC, which was very strong on it’s characters, as all of you who have read it will know. Bit short, though. I didn’t like ‘A Good Clean Fight’ at all, despite having Uncle, Skull, Patterson and Barton from POC in it again. Only the mention of one late Moggy Cattermole in it raised a cheer for me!
POC is still his very best, just as a tale of strong characters in a bad situation; nuts to those who criticise it for not being ‘real’, just enjoy the damn thing for what it is!
Good Lord, I’m a Campbell enthusiast with most of the books on the subject, and yet I have heard nothing about that one! I’ll go see what I can find out…
…and there’s currently one copy to be had via abebooks.com…
The full details of the book-which is on the shelf just above my PC here-are as follows-
‘Birth of A Spitfire’ by Clive Du Cros, published by Victory Books, ISBN 0952161109.
Victory boks address was given as- Victory Books, Eyres Barn, Upper Upham, Aldbourne, Marlborough, Wiltshire, SN8 2LF.
Not rusty and neglected like Hendon’s…not made of Airfix like Elvington’s…
WOW!!! Great stuff, excellent to see an update, thanks!
I suppose this wanders into that oft-argued territory of what’s ‘original’ or not; certainly LF363 is more brand new than original Hurricane now, though I’d like to think that it’s still a tad more original than some of the ‘dataplate’ aircraft that are ‘restored’.
Dave, photos of the Lanc with the wing mounted are plentiful-follow the link below and scroll down a tad just to see the first one I found quickly online!
As far as I’ve read, she flew just as nicely with the wing on as without?!
If you’re interested in PA474’s early life, I can’t recommend ‘the book ‘A Lancaster At Peace’ by Ray Leach highly enough, it’s cheap and available via the Lincolnshire Lancaster Association, linked to from the BBMF site you’ve visited.

Certainly- several tons of incendaries should do it… 😉
Living where I do, and not being able to go too far too often due to being my wife’s at home carer, I don’t get to see the old girl too often, but My God, when I do, it moves me to the bone. 😀
Perhaps they were looking to bomb any disgusting smokers found stood outside places of work?! 😀
Go on my girl, get down that runway and get some air under yer wings!!! 😀
