Looking good. This cant be just a training ship can it. Would you really kit it out with all of this if it were?

I also have doubts about it being a training ship, unless we have mis-understood what has been meant. They could have meant that it will be an operational carrier used to gain operational experience (leading to “on the job training”) before their own design is ready.

Considering, that modern multi-role fighters become extremely expensive, than some less rich states could consider to buy advanced jet trainer equipped with radar and AAMs to do a job of trainer, CAS and fighter plane. Gripen is lighter fighter plane, so is nearer to Yak-130 than heavy fighters. In conflicts between less rich states, there could be option for dog fights between planes like Gripen and trainers like Yak-130, both equipped with modern radars and AAMs.

The Gripen is not (as I believe you are suggesting) in the same class or near enough as the Yak-130. One is a multi-role super sonic fighter fitted with advanced avionics and the other is a lead in jet trainer. While the Yak-130 can take on simple combat roles such as CAS, it would not be wise to employ it in air defence…even fitted with radar. Look at single seat Hawk operators such as Malaysia and Indonesia. They are not operated for air defence and certainly wouldn’t be used against A/B model F-16s.

There is no realistic “vs.” discussion to be had on this subject. Both aircraft are in different leagues all together!

Yak-130 nose looks like it is equipped with radar. What radar RuAF Yak-130 have and how is radar equipped Yak-130 comparable with Gripen in combat capabilities if we don’t account, that Gripen is faster.

Why would you want to compare an advanced jet trainer to a multi-role fighter?

Yak-130 vs. modern variants of the Hawk maybe but not a Gripen

Clash on the Tunisian border? Any info?

    Hi guys,

I saw a glimpse of a news report this morning of Tunisian jets in action on the Libyan border. I only got the last couple of minutes and don’t know the full story, but one L-159 was dropping its payload. Don’t know if this was against Libyan rebels who had crossed the border or pro-Libyan forces attacking Tunisian territory. Have googled to no joy. Any one know anything?

I don’t doubt Israeli military power, however all of this “10:0 to Israel” type attitude worries me.

Personally I believe that, if anything like the Yom Kippur war ever happened again in our lifetimes then Israel would lose. Blasphemy! I hear you all scream. Well my reason for saying this is that if a combination of Arab nations did decide to unite to destroy Israel, it would probably consist of several nations that did not take part in the previous conflicts that are well equipped, Saudi Arabia for example.
Add to this hi-tech enemy the involvement of fanatical groups fighting a guerilla style conflict and Israel may find itself over whelmed.

    That weird Su-27 scheme.

I think it’s a rather striking scheme. I wonder how many carry it?

Are we any closer to a NATO designation for this beauty? Have the Russians named her this time?

Madrat, are you suggesting “volunteer” squadrons of PLAAF defending North Korea or China rushing J-10s to inexperienced and untrained Korean pilots? Believe it or not I have often wondered if China would organise several “volunteer” squadrons to fight in the event of a full blown conflict but can’t see it happening in reality.
I know that Kim has in the past asked China (I don’t have the link and forget if it was a payment offer or a request for free aircraft) to supply the KPAAF with its J-10 fighter. I believe China turned him down but for what reason I do not know.
I didn’t think North Korea had the ability to reverse engineer its fighter aircraft, do they even have an overhaul facility?

Well, the modern conflicts are in countries that are actually not worth managing or owning. Just get the oil and leave the rest of it to fester, oh did I release the long term plans again, damn.

As for Tibet and China, like Tibet can do anything about it? We should assist them, a good ruck with China will battle prove a lot of our kit and reverse the spending cuts.
Russia Japan. Not sure Japan is truly interested in getting it back? What’s Kan up to? Diverting attention away from the disaster into something which the Japanese people feel strongly about(Against) the Russians? But, the Northern territories people themselves want to stay with Russia, so I read.

But this is exactly what war has come down to, territorial disputes on a small scale. If Russia were ever to trade blows with Japan, neither nation is at risk of fighting for its survival. Japan does not want to conquer Russia and vice versa.
