Maybe i am paranoid, but the 2nd and 3rd from the left, remind me Messerschmitt BF-109 and Ju-87 Stuka respectively… I didn’t know Hungary operated them. Unless i am mistaken.

The “Magyar Waggon és Gépgyár” factory produced more than 500 Messrschmitt bf-109 between 1942-1944!

The Hungarian Royal Air Force used among many the following types:
    Messerschmitt Bf-109F-4/B – 66 pcs (east front)
    Messerschmitt Bf-109G-2/4 – 84 pcs (east front)
Messerschmitt Bf-109G-2/4/6 – about 150 pcs (home defence)
Messerschmitt Bf-109G-14 – about 126 pcs (home defence)
    Messerschmitt Bf-109G-10 – 25 pcs (home defence)

    And Ju-86, Ju-87, Ju-88, Bf-110, Me-210, FW-190 and other…

Poland bought up the last of the Lufwaffe’s MiG-29 (at a euro apiece – bargain), if it’s anyone in Europe it could be the Polish AF. Perhaps India, to make up numbers and attrition losses?

The Hungarian AF pilots in the picture above, aren’t they a bit, errr, old for front line pilots? Or is it just a get-together of retired pilots posing for a group shot?

The MiG-29 were used by old pilots, the young pilots used Gripen

Anyone has a picture of Zambia’s J-6? Has there been any?

What I meant by “quite a few” was that the Russians had a lot of MiG-25RB units. I’m not sure what you were thinking I meant, but I was certainly saying that I felt they had a lot of recce-Foxbat units.

    Ok, I just misunderstood then.

13 squadrons huh? That’s quite a few, but given the importance of the RB variants it makes sense. I presume the 13 squadrons you mentioned operated more than just the R & later RB models….perhaps using the more specialized RBK, RBT, RBV, etc.?

What means few to you? 🙂

When I wrote RB I meant R, RB, RBT, RBK, etc…!

Most of the Soviet Air Armies had such a reconnaissance regiment that flew with one (sometimes two) high speed Mig-25RB squadrons. The other squadrons were flying Mig-21R, Su-17M3, Su-17M4, Jak-27R, Jak-28R/PP/BI/RR, Su-24MR…

Originally (late 70’s – early 80’s) they were flying with Mig-25R/RB/RB…:
Germany: 931st regiment flew with Mig-25-Jak-28
Poland: 164th guard regiment flew with Mig-25-Jak-28
Leningrad Military District: 98th guard regiment flew with Mig-25-Jak-28
Belorussian Military District: 10th regiment flew with Mig-25-Mig-21
Moscow Military District: 47th guard regiment flew with Mig-25-Jak-28
Carpathian Military District: 48th guard regiment flew with Mig-25-Jak-28
Odessa Military District: 511st regiment flew with Mig-25-Jak-28
Transcaucasian Military District: 882nd regiment flew with Mig-25-Jak-28
Central Asian Military District: 39th regiment flew with Mig-25-Jak-28
Transbaikal Military District: 193rd guard regiment flew with Mig-25-Jak-28
Far Eastern Military District: 293 regiment flew with Mig-25-Mig-21

Further eleven reconnaissance regiments were flying Mig-21R, Jak-28R/PP/BI/RR

The unit at Shatalovo with the RB’s is the last one in the RuAF right? The one referred to in the Combat Aircraft mag from earlier in the summer?

Thirteen active (non test or instructor) squadrons of the Soviet VVS’s regiments flew with Mig-25RB from 70’s.

Only two squadrons of the two Russian regiments remained at the middle of the 90’s in Monchegorsk and Shatalovo airbase. These two squadrons are merged now on Shatalovo.

Not so sure anymore, I’ve been scouring the web for the OOB I saw the notation in (iirc operating in a mixed regiment with Su-24), it might have been the 164th GvBAP operating in the Moscow District (had mixed MiG-25 and Su-24), but I’ll have to find the original OOB since this one at global security org isn’t the one I was referring to, which I think is a later one (ca.2002 compared to 1998), I was pretty certain there were at least two mixed regiments operating the Foxbat-F listed, one a ShAP.

It is possible that global security org wrote this… 😀

But I’ m familiar with all the Soviet PVO and VVS regiments from the late 60’s till today

The 164th regiment only flew MiG-25BM between 1984 and 1990. They confuse it with the 47th regiment which fly with MiG-25RB in Shatalovo.

As far as I know, only 1.5 squadron was flying Mig-25BM at the end of the 80’s (GDR and Poland). These planes were inherited by Belorussia because they were concentrated here in 1990. Only test planes were left in Russia in 90’s but they didn’t fly.

Syria: I too read that in Combat Aircraft sept 2010. I think it was expensive and it’s life time expired.

Kazakhstan: in 1991 Kazakhstan inherited two Mig-25 units.

In 1990 a part of the 783rd fighter regiment (8 OA PVO – Mig-25PD) moved from Ukraine to Sary-Shagan in Kazakhstan. Here they flew in PVO training center. Kazakhstan didn’t operate these.

Kazakhstan inherited two reconnaissance regiments. The 371th reconnaissance regiment with Su-17M3 in Chimkent and the 39th reconnaissance regiment with Su-24MR and Mig-25RB in Balkhash. The Su-17M3 was disbanded in the mid-1990s. Because of the closeness of the Chinese border Russian supported the operation of the Mig-25RB. They only retired them in 2001 because they were too old. Now only Su-24MR is flying.

Now they store all Mig-25 in Kazakhstan.

Armenia: as you say Armenia had only one Mig-25PD, but they didn’t used it. They inherited it from the 82nd fighter regiment. The air defense of Armenia is provided by Russia with Mig-29 at Erebuni air base.

Syria: the Mig-25 fleet has been grounded since late 2009

    Armenia: never used

Azerbaijan: replaced for Mig-29 many years ago

Russia: only one reconnaissance squadron left, the 7000th air base Shatalovo

Kazakhstan: The Mig-25s were retired in 2001

Algeria: I don’t know, but maybe replaced for Su-30MKA

The Su-17M4 was outdated in 1981 when the first one was delivered.

The Siviet Air Force (VVS) recived only a very small number of this type. In the 80’s the 64 front-bomber and fighter-bomber regiments of the VVS received only 4 regiments worth of this type.
