the book
A very interesting book BTW
Hamish mahaddie (17th)…’Hamish’
Memoirs of ex brat
Pathfinder and Battle of Britain film advisor etc
Hi Judwin…I am an ex ‘brat’ myself (218th CCA)
Some brats did very well !!
Ted Stocker 37th
A Pathfinders War
Pathfinder Flight Engineer DSO
Trained as RAF pilot post WW2
Slight thread creep but if talking about ex Halton brats,i feel I should mention Gp Capt Frank Carey,AFAIK he has not written any books but Norman Franks wrote ‘Frank Chota Carey’ about him.
He joined up as a 15 yr old brat and became one of the most highly regarded fighter pilots/leaders,ISTR that there was a school of thought some years ago which said that Carey actually was the highest scoring RAF pilot of WW2.

Sorry guys this is mostly pie in the sky stuff, the Hortens were great high performance gliders but as jet a/c they were just death traps,as I posted in the earlier thread on these a/c…the fuel tanks were integral,ie the wing structure was the fuel tank,a fuel soaked wooden structure is hardly a sensible way of constructing a jet a/c especially when the engines were so unreliable and liable to go ‘bnag’ at any time.
There was no bulkhead to protect fuel/pilot/the other engine from an uncontained engine failure.
They did not have the control authority to cope with a single engine failure, although the jet Horten crash was probably at least partly the pilots fault, apparently he was not very experienced on multi engine a/c.
The long range bomber idea gave me a bit of a giggle ,how many engines would a Horten use to successfully fly long range 😀
Those engines were simply not up to production standards and it would have taken many years development to make them so.

Thanks bazv, I do use photobucket, but they seem to take ever-and-a-day to load up!
I suppose it depends on how many pics you upload,I usually select the ‘images’ I want and then go and do something else for a few mins 😀

PS. How do I overcome the problem of allotted attachment space running out?
You can use photobucket or similar, this also means you can post bigger photos 😀
Very nice photos btw
You might find this useful too:

There are some good clues in this link by Steve,to summarize some of them might be… Narrow track,High centre of gravity, centre of gravity quite well aft (which is why a swing will soon get out of control).
istr that one of the Luftwaffe experten called the landing characteristics of the later 109 as ‘Malevolent’ (Macki Steinhoff ?),not so much of a problem for the experienced pilot, but more so for the inexperienced.
Very nice John 😀
The cover is quite a distinctive shape so I am sure somebody will identify it.
I got the company name from this useful site,I bookmarked it ages ago but kept forgetting to post on here…
Gracesguide…1939 suppliers to the aircraft industry
Bell rung Tim,they have obviously made thousands of panels for lots of a/c over the years 😀
we have obviously seen the insp stamp before !!
SSG =
Splintex Safety Glass Ltd ??
they did manufacture nav/landing light panels.
But no help with aircraft type.

Hi Tim
DTD 339 is indeed the perspex spec.
SSG looks familiar but cant remember why

Blimey, you’ve set out on quite a quest haven’t you!
Again, great find. My googling skills are obviously in need of some serious tuning 😮
Nah…I am just v sad – I have always taken an interest in codes and insp stamps etc

According to this manufacturers codes list … SSG is probably Splintex, although the list is specifically for telingbone stuff,I would imagine the companies would use the same code for all their products…
Possibly also Suntex Safety Glass, who were in business up to about 10-12 yrs ago, and did a LOT of aircraft perspex.
Bruce
Nah Bruce…it must be Splintex because apparently the Crews prefer it and the manufacturers demand it 😀
