They say Elvis will be doing the test flight.
The Navy should not be organising their own open days and public events.
Get a marketing company on board, a media savvy PR outfit with some hip ideas, some giant screens, and everybody can text everybody else about something or other. It’ll be the greatest show on land or sea-
‘The Spirit of the Porthole’ . Its a winner.
Ah yes, the Sea Fury video- I have a question.
On the cover blurb, we are told there is included a live commentary as Capt J.B flies a display routine at RNAS Portland, as I recall.
As the T.20 cavorts around in the expected manner, he is indeed heard to narrate the sequence, but in a very lanquid, not to say laid-back manner, quite at odds with the breathless, keyed-up utterances one might expect from a hard-working pilot pulling maybe three or four G, in a demanding aerobatic routine. And that pounding Centaurus engine, well it sounds more like a Dyson Hoover, perhaps the DC08 CarpetPro.
So have we had a spot of post-production editing going on here??
The truth is out there!
Great video though. Made by people who really know and love the aeroplane, and it shows.
That model is by no means a rarity, and similar can be obtained at any Old Warden event, or amongst the airshow tat stalls. Generally marked up at about £10 or thereabouts. I find I have managed quite well without one.
A Cavalier Mustang perhaps? They have the extended fin,
as seem on Ormond Haydon-Ballie’s I-BILL.
Nice Beavers.
Well, somebody had to!
Slight thread drift, but is not La Ferte Alais this weekend?
They always seems to have a little extra Gallic verve, and pull stuff out of the hat which is not generally seen in the UK. I hope they have managed to find a little weather window. Looking at the satellite pics though, it looks a bit dodgy.
I too got caught up in the notorious Fairford jams, and resolved do something about it.
The answer was to throw the bike ( quick release wheels) in the back of the car, park in Lechlade and cycle the 5 miles in about 25 mins. Some shows will give you cheaper admission as you are then nominally a pedestrian, and no more hassle queueing to leave the car park.
Not a solution for every family scenario I realise, but I took my seven year old son on the trailer-bike and it all went fine.
This event has been staged with no spectator charge in numerous countries.
Will they maintain this arrangement in the UK ??
Stupid question really. No wonder this country is called ‘Treasure Island’.
The Abingdon debacle (Spirit of Avarice) has been put out of its misery
CANCELLED early this morning, due to inclement weather, and not because it was a totally shambolic rip-off…
What a shame for all the ‘worker bees’ who will have put in a lot of time and effort to try and make this doomed project work. Lions led by donkeys etc.
Galdri,
Interesting that you should draw paralells with Football and F1, perhaps the two most distasteful, exploitative and over-rated money-making rip-offs, masquerading as sport.
I believe a ‘Champions Leaque’ ( is that what it is called?) ticket would probably be £50 or more, and I think it is over £100 now to get into a Formula one event. I had to go for work once, and it was one of the most tiresome afternoons of my life. Right up there with watching paint dry.
The difference with airshow pricing is that even at the higher scale, I do not think huge profits are being made, and as an outdoor event, the scope for losses is ever-present. Even RIAT, where many of the ‘turns’ are provided at no charge, the cost of hosting the event, and accomodating the participants eats into the profit.
But, returning to the original premise this is after-all Rip-Off Britain and you can be sure that whatever we are charged ( for most goods and sevices) is judged to be the maximum the market will bear, and has to connection to fairness or value.
Seeing as the Air Force does belong to us, the tax payers who fund it, it seems reasonable to be able to go along and inspect it from time to time.
Plenty of other countries take this line as well, but if you are desperate to see your RAF inaction, get down to Spirit of Adventure at Abingdon this weekend and for a mere £40, see an airshow like no other (they say)
Oddly enough, the terrible weather predicted for this weekend will maybe save the organiser’s blushes, as when nobody turns up they will be able to blame the good old British climate, rather than their outrageous and fanciful admission tariff.
Well done.
I was wondering who would be the first to spot my deliberate mistake.
I think the Bond movie sequence (filmed at Northolt) was done with smoke and mirrors, or at least models and special effects.
Chrislea seemingly made just 12 aeoplanes (I was told) and so the survival ratio is pretty impressive for such a ‘distinctive’ type. As the saying goes, if it looks right , it flies right and yes, apparently these fly quite unpleasantly, though the Jeep a little better, since it has conventional controls.
That G-CEAR is a beautiful thing, has a touch a Falco about it.
Saturday was indeed jolly windy, but I was amazed to see quite a number of Cubs and Moths at the event, in weather where I would not have even opened the hangar doors. There was no sign of the usual Air Atlantique squadron, so the tone of the event was more light and fluttery. A Proctor and a Vega Gull made a lovely paired departure.
Today (Sun) was altogether better and there was a varied turnout, with a good Miles flavour as usual. Hairyplane was there with his fleet, and Melvyn with the ‘Red Beaver’, though it seemed to fly away with a empty seat, which should be illegal! There was also a pretty little Hatz biplane and three Chrislea examples.
All in all, a great event- long may it continue.
