Glad you liked them L&S, but it is a pity that so many are a bit ‘soft’ as we photographers like to say – can’t use the ‘out of f ‘ word !

The main issue was having to shoot through the optically irregular canopy of the Tobago, not to mention the ad hoc air combat which developed. We will do it from the Cub next time, which will be easier for everybody.

One of the ‘Bridge T.F’ replicas did inadvertently skip into the air during a high speed run behind a Dak. I have a notion that Jeff Hawke may have acquired ownership of one or more of these reconstructions.

The premise of this tale sounds very similar to (inspired by? ) a tale by aviation writer James Allen (Pilot magazine for many years) who wrote a whimsical and amusing book called ‘Flights of Fancy’, a mainly fictional collection of flying stories.

In ‘Delayed arrival’ he relates the story of a captain who flew an inaugeral service from Aberdeen to Croydon during 1937 in a Rapide, and on the way navigated through a very strange cloud formation. As they flew towards London, the view was familiar, yet totally strange.

‘When we got to Croydon, I almost choked. It was quite unmistakably Croydon, with the hangars and the Brighton Road, but no damn airfield, Built up…all over it! As London unfolded beneath me, I became more and more thunderstruck. Architecture I had never dreamed of, roads that did not exist.

In a panic, he lands at the hitherto unknown Heathrow, to be surrounded by police and arrested, and finally confined in a psychiatric, having somehow arrived unannounced in 1959. The aeroplane is quietly disposed of, and the whole episode hushed up by the authorities, who have no appetite for such mysteries or irregularities.

I recall her displaying at Biggin in about ’84 doing a routine with one gear down and a smoking engine.- I assumed it was intentional!

Its a sign of the times, I suppose. We all gradually realise that stacks of mags do not represent the best, or only way to store / access information.

We imagine that the day will come when we will at last sit down and read through these giant piles of magazines, but since I moved in 1996, mine have remained largely untouched, and to really go through them would be perhaps 3-4 weeks reading, during which time we forgo all the news/developments happening right now, which seems more appealing and relevant.

My dad collected all the Aeroplane Spotter publications from the war, hauled them round five houses and never read them again either! Now I have inherited them, and I am looking forward to not reading them as well.

No real problem, with a bit of lateral thinking.

Lanc could be a bit tricky, though

G-ARAM used to fly on skis with the Tiger Club (when it snowed ) mid 1960’s.
That was back in the days when we used to have real snow.

    Ok . A Spitfire

Adored by all, beautiful to behold, cherished by the whole nation, worth a million dollars.

My therapist made me say that.

She said the Airspeed Fleet Shadower was butt ugly, conceived in error and achieved nothing whatsoever.

Peter T roared over Chesham at 3.45 yesterday in his P40, heading back from White Waltham for the second weekend in a row.

We get a lot of traffic over here, as it is just outside the edge of the Heathrow zone, and also near the Bovingdon VOR, for those who bash the beacons.

PL983 does not seem to appear in these lists, though it is referred to in our ‘Spitfire Survey’ thread of yesterday.

It is the ex Old Warden / Martin Sergeant aeroplane which was ‘destroyed’ in France six years ago, but seemingly will rise again.

Nice shots T6, but that one of the L18 to the left and below makes me nervous just looking at it.

One of the worst situations in close formation is allowing one aeroplane to slide under the other, which will often result in both losing sight of each other ;- scary, very dangerous and unneccessary.

20,000 FW190’s? Can this be right.

I know a huge number of Me/Bf 109’s were made- perhaps someone has confused all those ones, nines and noughts.

I seem to recall about 21,000 Spits were built.
