Speaking personally, I hope to go to Hendon, see it perched on a pile of rocks ( or some imaginative diorama ) and I will breathe a sigh of relief that it was not turned into saucepans.

I understand the appeal in sometimes taking an anti group- think contrarian position, but really, what a load of cobblers !

There is no widespread appetite or merit in tearing apart this airframe, and using its DNA in a flyable reconstruction. Almost nobody promotes this stupid notion , so why bother constructing such a spurious case ?

It’s very boring. Did I mention stupid.

The point has been made before, but it is worth repeating, that the Kittyhawk ( as found ) is compelling and fascinating because it tells a story of human endeavour and tragedy.

To restore it in anyway, removes forever the very qualities which make it significant. I hope it is left untouched, and displayed sympathetically, and that it is able to serve a more useful purpose than that other desert relic, the ‘Lady Be Good” (B-24 Liberator)

You are alone in your dug-out, the opposition is massing, and you are running out of ammunition !

I am not at all the kind of person to to go on a public forum, and state that you are simply wrong.

In fairness SeaDog HAS achieved more, in practical terms, than many (most ?) forum members, to actually get historic aircraft into the air.

If that happens to give you, me, or any of us some sort of Status Anxiety, well, that’s just too bad.

Time for those broad shoulders 🙂

I know that the P40 has many devotees and supporters but, to equate this airframes importance to that of the Spitfire in question is surely ludicrous. We’re not short of either aircraft but, to my mind one simply cannot have too many Spitfires.

I had to re-read this to see if it was meant to be ironic.

You really think a stripped out late mark Spitfire hulk is of greater value than the lost-in-time Kittyhawk ? I think you CAN have too may Spitfires if their furtherment is at the expense of other types.

This is not just any old P.40 , and the publicity it generates is an indication of widespread public fascination. I would not cross the road to look at the gutted Spit, but would go a long way to see the P.40, and look forward to having the chance.

Maybe this would be a good time for SeaDog to set aside his anonymity and say who he is and how he knows what he knows, if that does not make him too uncomfortable.

It could underline his credibility and reinforce assurances as to the well-being of the salvaged P.40

Most of the hot-air generated here and on other forums is a consequence of an absence of knowledge.

Some ‘aircraft historian ‘ Pat Chiswick ( who he ? ) is pretty forthright in his criticism in the Telegraph article.

Maybe. Maybe not. In is an unfortunate and sad tale from start to finish (so far ) but I guess it is not good news copy without accusations flying and fingers pointed.

The Scout Group in Chesham Bois (Amersham) built an SE5. Its a bit droopy , but not bad at all.

I saw a Mustang racing past Bovingdon at 3pm, heading DX direction, so that makes sense.
