The PBS America documentary ‘After Chaos – Berlin’ contains a brief bit of B+W footage (at approx 10mins 50 secs of the programme) showing German soldiers picking over the wreckage of X2996. Can’t see the aircraft’s letter though.

I’ve been trying (unsuccessfully) to identify what aircraft this wreckage is from.

I retrieved it at low tide from Holme beach, North Norfolk (not far from Hunstanton) 2 weekends ago.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks G-ORDY

Thanks G-ORDY for your reply to my enquiry. I was aware of Westley’s history (from ‘Wings over Westley’ published privately 2 years ago). My problem is that I have been told there was an airfield that pre-dated Westley, possibly at Fornham All Saints, but have not yet been able to confirm it’s location. Thanks for taking the time and trouble to post your reply. All The best, Skyboy

Jack Charles flew a Hurricane across the Channel in May 1940 with a Polish pilot on his lap (see Aeroplane Monthly March 2005 page 27).

    suffolk airfields

    hello moggy,
as a fellow flyer (PA38’s from Nottingham) can you tell me if Suffolk has an aerodrome with tarmac runways suitable for nose wheel aircraft. I was under the impression that following the loss of Ipswich airfield, Suffolk was the only County in UK without such an aerodrome.
    all the best,
    skyboy.

    F/O Palmer

Hi Moggy, glad the info was of interest. Palmer gets a number of mentions in Brian Cull’s ‘Twelve Days in May’ and I will check these out re possiblity of injuries sustained by Palmer that precluded him being involved in BoB.
Can you confirm if ‘Piece of Cake’ was based on Richey’s ‘Fighter Pilot’ and do you know if the TV series of PoC is available on vid or DVD as I have never seen it.
    Many thanks. Skyboy.
