Ok, if anyone can solve the following for me I will be eternally grateful (and it will help me immensely with the collection of RAF videotapes I am currently cataloguing)

    1) Any clue what PMP stands for in relation to the RAF? All I have so far is footage of paratroopers practicing jumping out of aircraft over Salisbury Plain. It has been suggested that PMP stands for ‘Practice Makes Perfect’, but if anyone has got evidence/further ideas, please help!

If anyone can solve the above I will be eternally grateful 😀

It isn’t Personal Media Player then, or the Filipino Workers Party (Partido ng Manggagawang Pilipino, PMP) or the World Federation Of Scientists Permanent Monitoring Panel.

What’s the context apart from being military/RAF? These are all real:

    Project Management Plan
    Project Management Professional (Certification)
Performance Measurement Procedures (from a Canadian military website)
    Permanent Military Professor
Protective Mobilization Plan (US Army WWII)
Proletarian Military Policy (invented by Leon Trotsky therefore unlikely)

BTW Cataloguing. Do you mean cataloguing as in MARC21-type Cataloguing (AACR and all that stuff?)

Someone at work asked me today which DC3 it was that Hughie Green flew/operated after the war. The only thing I could find out about him (without looking too far) was that he flew Catalinas out of the Clyde. Anyone got any further info about his flying exploits after the war. A reg would be great if possible…and I mean that most sincerely folks! Cheers all.

    Keith

Hughie Green eh? Many of these youngsters won’t know who he is! Of course this may not be a bad thing. 🙂 Bring on Monica Rose – that’s what I say. Wonder if she’s still alive?

There was an article about him in A***pl*ne monthly many years ago. IIRC He said on “Double Your Money” that was a ferry pilot on B-24s for a while and the article also said that at some point he (as a Flight Lieutenant?) commanded a small unit unit of RAF PB2Y Coronados on ASW in the Carribbean somewhere (there were pix of this). Post war I have no idea – but did you see the bits on Google about Hughie having a role in the reporting of the Roswell Incident (or not) in 1947?

I know these engines are cared for as lovingly as a vintage airframe but what is left of these B of B engines, I’m aware 44 were built but how were these names chosen and what is the significance behind the choice.

John – have a look at:

    http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/cosford/exhibitions/loco_plates/index.cfm
    and/or

    http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/london/exhibitions/loco_plates/collection.cfm

Which gives a little detail. Apparently the RAFM have 18 of the 44 locos’ name plates. It’s not clear to me if they’re located in London or Cosford (you can find hits at both London and Cosford URLs – see above) but they’re not on public display according to the website.

    Also check out:

    And this little snippet from

    http://www.buses.co.uk/history/fleethist/620ob.htm

    Oliver Bulleid
Usually know as O V S Bulleid he was one of the innovators of locomotive design is still remembered today even though he was born back in 1882 in New Zealand.[…] He designed the famous West Country, Battle of Britain and Merchant Navy class of locomotives. The Battle of Britain class ‘Fighter Command’ was the 1,000th engine to have been built at the locomotive works in Brighton. It was named at a special ceremony in Brighton Station in 1947 with Air Vice Marshall Keith Park and fighter ace Douglas Bader present.

Limited (ie fairly useless) advice from the other siode of the Atlantic – I have an HP Scanjet (3500 something – I forget) which makes a very acceptable job of scanning 35mm slides (individually or a couple at a time) and 35mm negatives in strips. Cost about 150 bucks from a well known american office equipment shop. Heaven knows what it costs back in Blighty.

It’s very useful for scanning the negatives that wal-mart forgot (good film title!)

Sadly seems to be true. This article published some time ago has now been posted as a tribute.

Mmitch – Thanks – sad news indeed. RIP Roger and condolences. He didn’t know it but he was one of the people who got me into all of this. And for that, I will be in his debt.

Off-Topic – Strategic Air and Space Museum

I do believe that all airplanes at the Sac Museum are located inside.

They are – the thing is, the B-17F in question (B-17F-50-DL 42-3374 painted as s/n 42-30230, “Homesick Angel” 562BS/388BG)
is not at the SAC Museum (or even the Strategic Air and Space Museum) – it’s sitting outside STRATCOM (formerly SAC) at the Capehart Road entrance to Offutt AFB.

The B-17 at the SASM (B-17G-85-DL [DB-17P drone controller] 44-83559 painted in 96th BG colours now – was painted as “King Bee” of 100BG) is a different airframe entirely.

But yes, everything else (including XM573 but excepting the missiles outside the front door) is undercover

    XM573 in Nebraska

Does anyone have any recent pictures of XM573?

Saves me the trouble of scanning mine – these are much better anyway.

    http://www.6v6gt.com/SAC/Index0002.html and http://www.6v6gt.com/SAC/Index0003.html

PS readers may also notice that the Strategic Air and Space Museum is no longer at Offutt AFB but moved about 30 miles to Ashland, Nebraska. It’s a really nice facility.

I noticed a couple of Vulcan-related websites with “last updated” dates in 2005 still refer to the museum as the “SAC Museum” (OK, the locals do too) and still say it’s at Offutt AFB – neither of these statements are accurate.

    XM606 in Louisiana

XM606 Eighth Air Force Museum, USA

    There are some pics here:

    http://airpower.callihan.cc/HTML/Spotlight/avrovulcan.htm

No idea how old the pix are – only just found them – XM 606 looks to have been partially repainted at some point since the serial number and fin flash are missing. I have no idea what Katrina did to the museum – the website is under construction, which sounds ominous.

That covers the three American Vulcans so I’ll shut up now. 😀

A number of preserved Vulcans have been repainted in some form of other over the past 20 years following their retirement…here is the list of what I have..does anyone have more updated information on the others…

XM573 Strategic Air Command Museum, Nebraska, USA

I saw XM573 a while ago and it hadn’t been re painted. It was looking a little faded from its time outside in the Nebraska summers and winters. It’s inside now – IIRC the Strategic Air and Space Museum (was SAC Museum) has been inside since 1998-ish.

OT – Now if the USAF could get the B-17F down the road at Offutt AFB indoors that’d be nice too. AFAIK It’s still sitting in the open

Human resources command? What the goddamned hell is THAT?

    (cunning bump!!)

You mean management-speak hasn’t penetrated into deepest Suffolk? 😀
I thought they were ALL at it. What do the UK aremed forces call Personnel these days? I got really peeved when someone in the UK software industry used the phrase “we’ll have to put some more resource on this” to which I replied “you mean people? Which ones?”

Wasn’t it the PBI in World War 1?

I have just recieved three such files, which were ordered nearly a year ago, and I need to pay $30.20 to the US Army Human Resources Command either by a cheque or money order in US Dollars.

My Building Society can’t do either in US Dollars, so can anyone here who has had dealings with the above reccomend the best/cheapest bank etc. to go to where theey can do cheques or money orders in US Dollars?

I hope this isn’t too off topic for ‘Historic’ but the crew did lose their lives in 1944, and I doubt anyone with the relevant experience would see it on ‘GD’.

    Cheers

    Geoff.

    Hi Geoff,

Not in connection with the above, but my family occasionally send money orders from British banks (birthday presents, y’know) in US Dollars. (e.g. my Dad uses his local Natwest) I think all the big clearing banks do it, but it’ll cost you between five or ten quid, I think.

Note. Make sure they write the date in the format 5 October 2005 (ie write the moneth as a word) because as you know the USA reverses the day and month (today it’s 10/4/05 in the USA and 4/10/05 in the UK) and US banks *can* get stroppy about dates they don’t understand – in my experience a bank here (which admittedly is in the boonies) refused to pay in a money order with a date they thought was in the future. Had to turn the accent up full for that one!! 😀

Pete – never seen the Beech 18 Bus, have seen a C47 on a school bus chassis…

On American ebay a few weeks ago a specialist coachbuilding firm was offering a Boeing 727 fuselage (okay, the front half of a 727 fuselage) already mounted on a chassis from a Mercedes-Benz bus.

    [Edit – it’s still there. Item number 4579294255] http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Boeing-727-Jet-Limo-Tour-Bus-Limousine-Billboard-YOU_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6728QQitemZ4579294255QQrdZ1

Isn’t this how several historic types were recovered? Having been turned into caravans, houseboats, etc?

What goes around, may come back around. Wonder how a Canberra nose might suit a small-block chevrolet engine? 😀

    .

What about Catch 22? Wasn’t that based on a true story? I’ve not seen it in years and don’t rememebr the story too well.

Joe Heller was a B-25 pilot in the MTO but I think that’s where the similarity between the film/book and reality ends.

Like someone said somewhere – look at the original “Memphis Belle” (Directed by William Wyler) and also a documentary called “Thunderbolt” which documented the activities of a P-47 unit based in Corsica.

It’s not really a question of where Hollywood got it right or wrong. In some cases they were merely setting out to entertain and if the truth was inconvenient it got by-passed. In some cases where they were making documentaries they couldn’t afford to mess it up.

Which brings us to Propaganda. 😀
