So the APU door is open ? Did the crew start it as soon as they lost power ? Usually it is started after landing with flight director’s switched off and flaps fully retracted ? Does anybody know why it is open ?
Cheers
Jamie M
The APU is started automatically when there is a engine failure. It maybe that the engines never failed – it appears, according to the AAIB they didnt respond to increased power demands for whatever reason – but if a major lack of response from the engines automatically starts the APU I dont know. Different airlines have different operating procedures and so the point during the flight at which the APU is turned on by the crew differs.
The video of its approach on youtube is very interesting to watch, even if it is just a few seconds worth of footage.
The engines and electronics on that aircraft type have such a history of reliability, and there is so much redundancy, that it seems that a failure of one of those systems is unlikely.
Pilot procedures also are honed to a very reliable sequence so except in v. unusual circumstances it would seem an unlikely cause.
I’m wondering if one of the procedures in the circuit is to switch to a fuel tank that is as yet unused, in which case, with Beijing as the departure airport, the possibility of contaminated fuel seems plausible, and would seem to account for what happened.
‘Engines roaring’ observation of one passenger could be engines trying to run with incorrect or contaminated fuel.GeoffR
Exactly what I began to think – until I thought that for the result/consequence of the use of contaminated fuel to occur so late in the flight was unusual or unlikely – as far I am aware, fuel has to be moved around the aircraft (albeit limited movement), and fuel has to be taken from multiple tanks at the same time to retain the balance of weight in the aircraft.
If contaminated fuel was suspected, actions would most likely have been taken already at Beijing?
Due to the on-going redevelopment of Terminal 1, the landside food court (and all that goes with it) will be closing on February 25th.
Will have to start saying our good-byes to the Donkeystone Pub and the Lancaster Brassarie. Will be the end of an era and an end to one of the great UK landside viewing ‘spots’.
I for one will really miss the food court as it is at the moment – I will have go and find somewhere else to go and relax away from the office!
🙁
I was expecting something completely different in this thread…
You certainly have some nice photos of her, Ian. She was even subject to a Screeners and Peoples Choice award on Jetphotos.net just less than a month ago.
ETOPS – Extended [Range] Twin [Engine] OPerationS – a certification that allows twin engined aircraft to fly long haul flights where the route takes the aircraft more than 60-180 minutes from a nearest suitable diversion airport in an emergency – i.e. when flying the transatlantic routes. ETOPS is based on the aircraft flying on one engine to the nearest suitable diversion airport, and the airline and aircraft type needs to demonstrate that they are capable of ETOPS through stringent maintenance and standards.
The complete loss of power/electrics theory is even more interesting when you consider that the 777 is an ETOPS aircraft, and was designed as such from the outset.
Therefore, it has lots and lots of redundancy built into to the power and control systems. This allows the aircraft to legally fly with some systems inoperative.
I’m speculating, but perhaps some systems were inop and then the backups failed? Will be interesting to see exactly what failed.
As an aside, diversions were on the relatively small scale. One aircraft – a BA 757 – diverted to Manchester. About 20 diverted to London airports.
Amazing photos. I wonder what the puncture in the fuselage skin, on the right hand side, in between the two rear doors is all about. Flying Debris?
I love how ‘forumites’ are becoming more artistic with their photography – this is one such excellent example – it makes for much more interesting photos – they’re great – not just stock images of aircraft. They each have ‘something else to look at’ and multiple points of interest.
Great work ‘Umble T. 🙂
You could try Ad-Aware – http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ – the free version is good. run a full system scan.
Also, download this program – Hijack This – http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
It detects every running process on your computer and you can save a log file and post it on relevant forums for people to examine. they’ll be able to guide you as to which programs or processes shouldnt ‘be there’.

Excellent work Sam! Where were you when you took the last two shots?
Thats a collection of stunning photos if I ever saw one!
What is that Black ring, looks like it used to be a Freight door.
Super shots, flcriminal.
the black ring is dirt mainly – caused by the airbridge when attached.

It really is good to see shots like this on the forum – and excellent shots they are too. I was in the visual control room before Christmas and felt it was a really strange environment – a world away from the floors below – can’t really describe it, but there was something unusual about the whole place.
I’m guessing Mr Dowley was just on the floor underneath you when you took those!
Paul
Ahh, but alas, I was somewhere on the M6 when these were taken.:D
