It’s down, but whatsit?
Since this thread has partly drifted to helos shot down, here is another one:
From the national photo collection:
Israeli soldiers posing for a souvenir snapshot in front of a giant Egyptian helo shot down during YKW on the west bank of the canal. (photo Gat Shmuel 1974-02-20, D335-081 : הנומת דוק )
Giant Helo should mean Mi-6 Hook, right? Can you id whether it’s a Mi-6 or Mi-8 ?
Can you post the images of the Cohen Mi-8?
From the state’s national photo collection
Eliezer Cohen was the CO of Refidim AFB during YKW, and flew this HIP back to the base.
During a commando insertion, the egyptian pilot failed to brake properly and broke the front leg. He came out of the helo to see what happened, but failed to lower his head to match the reduced clearance. He got killed.
On seing this, the copilot and the commandos fled the scene, leaving the helo intact with engine still on. It ran all night until it the fuel ran out.
When IDF troops discovered it, they notified Refidim AFB. Eliezer Cohen had the helo refueled and brought in an Egyptian POW pilot, who showed him the basic controls. He flew the chopper back to Refidim.
This chopper was subsequently repared and re-used. (eh, habibi! 😀 )
On my archive i have two pics of a “strange” Mi-8 destroyed “in the sinai”. Note the strange “theets” on the tail wreck. I never see this in another Mi-8.
FYI, the helo abandoned intact near Abu Rudis and recuperated by Eliezer Cohen shows the exact same bumps on the tailboom.
They do not appear on photos of Egyptian Hips taken in the 1980s, though.
EGYPTIAN AF trainer (probably a Zlin) CAIRO 1989

Yes, it is the Zlin Z-226 “Trener” displayed at the Cairo citadel “victory” museum.
Nice shot, too. Thanks.
I am looking for the Netz with the 6.5 kills!
Check the usual sites, airliners :p and such.
Don’t be afraid to use the ‘more photos of same aircraft’ feature –> 14 pics at airliners
I do not read Hebrew, so any help is appreciated!!!!
Tsahi speaks English, and the merchav aviri site has an English version.
If you are making a model or somesuch, his walkaround is really worth it.
at least two F-16s bore this number 107: a Netz (of Osirak + 6.5 kills fame) and now a Sufa.
If you mean the Netz, Tsahi has shot a whole walkaround of it in 2004. You can contact him on merchav aviri or on fresh.
can you provide the date, location and sources for the two after-burned kills and the same data for the other F-4 14 kills
14 Mi-8s were shot down in the Ras Sudar / Sharm attack, but not all of them by F-4s. Two Mirages (or Neshers?) joined in, and some Mi-8s were downed by ground forces too. IIRC it was Kurnas 7/ Deltas 2/ Ground 5.
The second incident is much later in the war, October 17th or so. Near the Sinai west coat IIRC, but unfortunately I don’t remember more. (it’s been a while)

A somewhat similar type of helo shootdowns happened during op shalom hagalil (Levanon 1982), when IDF tankers used HE rounds to toss hovering Syrian Gazelle-HOTs into the terrain.
Photos of downed SA-342L at airliners.net and here.
