Hi Locobuster,
Have a look at this link to a website on American military patches by Dr. Howard G. Lanham.
http://www.angelfire.com/md2/patches/variations/var4af8.html
It looks like the picture in the centre showing an 8th air force patch of the blunt wing type, machine embroidered, U.S. made.

I say: Never forget!
Always in gratitude to those who served.

Keep posting, Rob! The forum is all the better for passionate debate. 🙂
By the way, good luck with your Navy meeting. We’re all hoping the outcome will be of benefit to the Preservation scene.

Brilliant! Thank you very much Flat 12*2 and Mark12. Very much appreciated. 🙂
I believe this was my very first sighting of a real Spitfire!

Great photographs!
This was my first ever visit to Shuttleworth and I must agree with everyones comments on what a marvellous show it proved to be.
From start to finish it was absolutely brilliant.
Everything was so unique, capped off with a scintillating display by the Spitfire.
I wish I had a camera to take a photograph of the Tutor basking in the warm evening glow at the end of the day. It looked fantastic!
Well done to all involved!

Paul
I vaguely recall in the news section? in Flypast (many years ago) of an underground bunker in Germany containing Luftwaffe aircraft.
This was located on an airfield later occupied by the Americans who simply concreted the entrances in as it was believed the aircraft were booby-trapped by the retreating Germans.
Anyone else remember this article?
I had a quick scan through some back issues but couldn’t find it. 🙁
P.S. As an interesting aside, I read in one of the letters page (May 1989) about a chap who claims a friend of his was involved in the dumping of 400 Merlin engines in a Southwark council tip in the 1950’s.

Tail markings should be in reverse?
Red towards the front and blue towards the rear?

The cockpit structure bidding has now finished.
Final bid was £1,254.00. Bid by someone called ‘iramoo001’.

The Polish ‘Chequerboard’ is generally shown as red top left in most of the pictures I have seen.
…However, not so in this picture of ‘Lanny’ Lanowski’s P-47 (incidentally, one of my favourite Thunderbolt paint schemes).

New Beech FR47 unveiled.
I know this doesn’t answer your question, but out of interest….
Last season, Leicester City initiated a ‘Poppy Day’ Premiership match, where proceeds went to the Poppy Day Appeal.
The Club’s players wore special football tops with the poppy embroidered on the front. The match may even have been shown on Sky.
If I remember correctly, the tops were auctioned after the match and the proceeds donated to the Appeal. 😎

My only slight concern at the time was that I was ushered into car park 1 with no sign of marshalling anywhere to be seen. People were left to their own devices to park. I was hoping there wouldn’t be chaos on the way out and thankfully this wasn’t the case.
By the way, I can thoroughly recommend the book, ‘Spit & Polish’. Love the title!

Paul
