    “Today’s reading assignment” here:

    http://formerspook.blogspot.com/

    (currently the 2nd post)

and it’s cited article make some good points.

That article is hilarious, and deserves to be shattered apart piece by piece on my blog. Look for it this weekend or early next week. This guy has absolutely NO IDEA what he is talking about, and if you have any experience in military operations, you’ll know just what I mean. He has apparently never heard of the concept of ISR I guess.

You don’t seriously believe Russia is blameless here do you?

I never said they were totally blameless, but come on, they were attacked. All of the uproar over a response to an attack is really asinine and is only this out of proportion because it involves RUSSIA. Again, where is the hard evidence of these “provocations” to get Georgia to do anything?

Firstly, the Mig-25 was used in combat and SR-71 was not.

Lies. The SR-71A was used over Libya during ELDORADO CANYON, and was used extensively over Korea and Vietnam during the Vietnam War.

There was at least 10 Phoenix missiles launched on Mig-25 in Iraq, and all in vane. The Migs were too fast.

Lies. Read Iran Iraq: War In The Air or Iranian F-14s In Combat.

And third, one A-12 has been damaged over Vietnam on 30.oct.1967 by SAM-2 missile. It was lucky escape. The peaces of missile warhead were found imbeded in lower wing area.

Lies. The solitary fragment found was a piece of the missile body not a warhead fragment.

The SR-71 routes are carefuly prepared before each flight, to avoid any SAM missile sites.

Lies. Baltic flights for example commonly entered within SA-5 range and MiG-25/31 range. Being outside USSR airspace, they weren’t going to be shot at. A-12 flights overflew North Korea with impunity, disregarding the SA-2s on the ground there.

I said earlier, its alert time, as interceptor, was awfull.

An alert time you have no basis in fact for.

As well as its inability for any normal maneuvering (loops, zooms, rools, split-S, sudden dives, etc).

Irrelevant. It was a bomber interceptor, not a fighter aircraft. Find me the long-range bomber that was doing all of those maneuvers.

Only high altitude reconnaissance was the option for Blackbird.

Irrelevant. The sensor system did not need to drop to a lower altitude to function effectively.

The U.S. humanitarian aid airlift to Georgia is a brilliant policy

…or an attempt to save face after not coming to the defense of a supposed ally.

The act itself is uncontroversial, nonconfrontational

Sure, flying military aircraft into an area where the Russians are trying to stomp on an aggressor is nonconfrontational. Right. lets say Pakistan fires on Indian positions in Kashmir. India rolls in to stomp on the Pakistani artillery to end that idiocy. The US airlifts supplies to Pakistan. I’m sure India would view that as uncontroversial and nonconfrontational.

positive, supportive and universally beneficial nature of U.S. involvement in the Caucasus

Like what? Watching as they get beaten down by the Russians and then offering to help pick up the pieces?

Humanitarian aid delivered by a strategic ranged, but tactical field capable C-17 shows national resolve

A far better show of resolve and support would have been aiding in the defense of a supposed ally.

placing current Russian actions within the correct context

What context would that be? The context most supportive of the Western opinion of Russia? The proper context is that they responded when attacked. Overkill maybe, but Georgia could’ve prevented this by not deciding on such a retarded ocurse of action.

    an attainable but substantial capability

…and overkill when a much cheaper aircraft like the Il-76 is just as capable of performing the exact same function.

aid civilians against violence and coercion

More like aid civillians AFTER violence and coercion.

But is it logical to try and defend your airspace against Russia? Point defense of key facilities or maneuver units with mobile SAMs like the Buk-M1 seems to be the most sensible option. Combat aircraft would seem to be an illogical luxury incapable of being effective against a much larger force. Look at Iraq in 1991. We either obliterated their air forces or scared them off to Iran. But point defense assets were a problem for lower-altitude combat aircraft for a very long time during the conflict.

What are we saying that the goal of the new Georgian fighter aircraft should be? Air defense or CAS?

Oh please, there being painted as the bad guys here becaues they are acting wrecklessly and and barbaric, nothing to do with some silly tin foil conspiricy that the west wants to cover up it left Georgia out to dry, people already knew that on day one, i’m afraid here Russia applied the bad guy paint to themselves and people simply pointed it out.

Well then Georgia should have no problems providing tangible evidence of such Russian endeavours, which they have not done to this point. All there has been is a bunch of claims in the media, Where is the actual credible evidence? And yeah, both sides are likely making things up, like Russia claiming that a Ukrainian supplied S-200 shot down the Tu-22MR, and they are both at fault in that regard.

“If it is alright for Kosovo to want to be an independent”

But not for a Chenynia right?

Precisely my point, neither the West nor Russia can have it both ways. Either all of these little ethnic groups are entitled to their own nation states, or none of them are. By backing Georgia, the West is saying that none of them are, in effect making them two-faced and untrustworthy after they just got done telling Kosovo that it DID have that right. A move which, amusingly, Russia did NOT support.

Anyway your still in the ‘who started it’ mentality, others have gone beyond that and have seen exactly what Russia is up too, they have noticed the awful often barbaric treatment of the Georgians under a suppossed ‘peace keeping’ moniker and are not afraid to criticise. Btw there is still no independant confirmation that georgia did start it, just Russian say so and given how tottally honest and open they have been during this conflict i somehow doubt its the definitive truth. Inviting South Ossetian thugs and other militia men along with them for the ride too to loot and pilage Georgian towns, Thats some awesome peace keeping there by Russia,i hate to compare but it would be like the Yanks inviting Kuwaiti militia men to go trash, rob and destroy Iraqi cities after desert storm. I guess some countrys leaders have no shame or morals.

Yeah, and the Georgians have been open and honest, right? Like claiming that all sorts of targets were being bombed by mad Russians, and then when camera crews arrive to report on the devastation not a single bomb has hit anywhere? Take all of the news coming from over there with a grain of salt; there will be propaganda and misinformation, deliberate or not, coming from BOTH sides. Georgia DID start this off by attacking Russian forces, and they are suffering the consequences. The West is trying to paint Russia as the bad guy to make the world ignore the fact that it left Georgia out to dry!

Well that was a well thought out, intelligent and non-biased post if ever i have seen one, question though: do you not think its perhaps the Russians who are the ones who never learn, i mean just as the international community started to respect and trust Russia they go and do something barbaric and frankly childish, there ‘peace keeping’ has shown to be nothing more then an excercise in brutality toward the civilian population of alot of Georgia, congrats Russia you did yourself proud!

    Are you serious?

First off, Georgia initially wanted to put down the separatist movements. Russia went in to keep that from happening. If it is alright for Kosovo to want to be an independent nation and have that desire embraced by the international community, then it is alright for these two provinces to want to separate from Georgia. Let me tell you why the West is up in “arms” over this:

    1. Because Russia supports their movement, so it must be a bad idea

    2. Because it’s easy to blame it all on Russia for intervening in the first place and sweep the affair under the rug instead of dealing with it, in order ot secure another NATO ally.

    3. The EU is not interested in solving isues in Europe, they like to ignore such things and wait for NATO to take care of it.

Shaakashvili tried to be smooth and evict the Russian peacekeepers while the world was distracted by the Olympics. Oops. I guess Medvedev does have some power in Russia after all.

Russia did the same thing the USA did after 9/11. They were attacked, so they took action to try and eliminate that threat. Tough luck for poor little Georgia. They could’ve prevented this by:

    -Not attacking Russian forces!
-Allowing the two regions to at least possess a degree of autonomy if not full independance from Tbilisi. If that was acceptable for Kosovo, again, it should’ve worked here. Unless NATO is a completely two-faced organization not interested in solving problems on a fair and equitable basis.

Georgia got what it deserved. If you poke the tiger in the eye, don’t complain when it takes your face off with its paw.

Where NATO and the West really dropped the ball in this is by not supporting…wait for it…Russia! Think of the kind of political ammo this would’ve given them. They’d most certainly have a leg to stand on to critizise anything Russia does to stifle the Chechens from that point forward, which could’ve been a massive bargaining chip to remove nonsensical Russian objections to the missile defense program.

Yeah, just like in BUFF, that second F is most definitely not meant to mean “fella” 😀
