Even just hearing the sound of a Napier Sabre would be awesome on it’s own right.
However, it would be no small task to keep one of those engines running perfectly.
Actually how reliable just were the N. Sabres ?
Lotsa moving parts….
Very touching
Just a question from me,…
Seeing as there was the “Flug Werk” thread going also…
How does the RR Merlin compare with the DB601’s for stripping and rebuilding, parts rarity aside ?
Does the fact that the DB601 appears “upside down” make a difference ?
Cheers
Chris
Is that a Jumo engine from one in the foreground of the first pic of the Avia ?
Apparently a dog of an aircraft due to the underpowered Jumo, still very nice example of one though
Getting a tad off the subject (well, sort of) another german “prototype” aircraft that fascinates me is the Heinkel he119
Powered by 2 coupled DB601’s in the middle of the fuselage, this thing looks awesome !!
Originally to be a recce aircraft, also tried for the world speed record in 1937, but crashed.
The F-82 spun the props in opposite direction, but there’s no mention of this with the 109Z, so I would also envisage it being a handful on the ground!!
It did say that the armament was four 30mm MK108 Cannon and one 30mm MK 103 cannon plus one 1102 lb and two 550 lb bombs so had really decent firepower and offensive capability.
Plus also having a good rate of knots and good range…could have been a force to be reckoned with, had it been developed.
The F-82 was a big success (over Korea) so why not the Me-109Z me wonders
yeah, maybe, but then again, the F-82 only had 2 main wheels and coped fine.
In this instance it would be like having 2 twin main wheels…similar to the HE-177 setup I guess.
I found a very interesting proposed variant of the ‘109
Called the Zwilling, just like the He-111Z
Powered by 2 Jumo engines, 1240 ml range and top speed of 462 mph @ 26000 ft.
1 prototype was made and suffered damage during an air attack and then the development was abandoned. Wonder if the yanks got wind of it and copied the idea for the F-82….
Here’s another pic from my same source…
Its a Bf 109 V4 aka Bf 109B-01.
Caption reads “…was the first example of the fighter to be flown with an engine-mounted MG 17 machine gun which resulted ina cropped spinner.
says “Bf109 B-1 issued to 2./J 88 of Legion Condor”.
Looks nice in Spanish c/s
Here’s a pic I scanned from my book “Warplanes of the Third Reich” by William Green
These were issued to the Legion Condor in 1937. So, these are German 109’s given to Spain….
I reckon these early ones are also very good looking…
To be honest Daz, in looks damn sexy in that photo:)
whats that word they used in WW2 Germany for imitation coffee??
Ersatz I think it was………
Ersatz ‘109 anyone ?
Hiya,
Great pics !!
I personally prefer the April one myself.
But all are great !!
My thoughts are if I was to do it then I would take the approach of “if I don’t get them , they will get me…”.
I guess a will to live would make a slight difference……
