    Was that an Indian Air Force vet or RAF ?
    Were Tempests used by other air-forces other than RAF ?

    Daz, aside from navalisation and 2×3-bladed props, how different is the 24 to the 47 ?

    Actually not live, but I’ve heard one on a video…weird noises alright.

    Also I’m with you there, Nick. I prefer the Griffon sound too. Sorta like a hotrod or a Merlin running on 11 cylinders…:D

    Unfort I’ve never had the opportunity to even see a real life Shacky let alone hear one….:(

    Just interested in the differences in sounds that the 2 props would have made over the conventional one.

    I totally agree, OAW.

    I truly believe that the glider pilots were one of the unsung hero’s of the war.
    They had to land in fields with big stakes in them, with no opportunity to “go-around-again”, and all the while being shot-up with very little fire back capability.
    You woulda needed ‘nads the size of basketballs.

    My guess would be 500-550 knots.
    The tempest was very fast in it’s day.

    Must have been a sight to see in the air being towed by a Stirling.

    How can anything THAT big glide, esp with a load inside it ??

    I once heard that Horsa’s had the glide characteristics of a brick , and they didn’t land, they were crashed in a controlled manner…:D
