    LOL – Daz 😀

I reckon its got some TU-95 Bear influence in it’s design.

    Now here’s a doozy for you….

Would you belive this site http://www.fortunecity.com/tattooine/farmer/120/ named THIS particular aircraft as ugly ??????

    mmmm….what was he smoking….???

Was that PZL jet biplane ever used ?
Looks like it would have some outstanding flying qualities.

As for the Bychok, I reckon it actually doesn’t look half bad:)

In terms of engineering all they were doing was to endlessly modify and improve an existing design!

    Fair comment,

I guess the way I was looking at it was from a tail-wheeled, straight wing evolution, but you have a good point there.

Its all in the nose, IMHO.

You put a Conty 0-200 in there and shorten it up and it would look more normal…
    😀

I’m happy to be proved wrong,..like I said it’s only an opinion.

I just wanted to find out more about this obscure aircraft.

Well, looks like there was a Mk VI that was used in the far east.

The only pic I could find was a b/w one but it gives a good representation.

I would think it would depend on where it’s likely to be taking off and landing…ie mostly tarmac at airshows.

After it crashed they built a completely new fuselage as well, so in a way, there is nothing ‘Spitfire’ in the Spiteful. What I was getting at, was that, what ended up as the Spiteful, was designed to remedy problem spots in the Spitfire. The new wing was designed to increase the wings stiffness, and to try and get a higher critical mach number (which failed!). The new fuselage was designed to improve the deflection shooting view from the cockpit, which in all Spitfire variants up to that time had been rather bad.

The Attacker had the Spiteful wing, and was therefor carrying the Spitfire legacy into the jet age, as the wing was designed as an improved wing for the Spitfire.

To take another aircraft, the Boeing 737. It has had a new fuselage, new engines, new wing, new systems and so on, but is is still a B737. So I think the Spiteful is just as much a Spitfire.

Actually, just thinking more about the Spiteful/Attacker connection and Spitfire/Spiteful connection…..

The Spitfire Mk1 and Mk24 were both Spitfires, but IMHO, they probably have no interchangeability but are still Spits.

So I believe that the Spiteful IS part of the Spit family and so is the Attacker.

Actually speaking of taking off and landing…

The Attacker must have been a mission to land on the carrier with a tailwheel plus the early jet technology of slow responsive engine if a go-around was needed.

Or am I wrong here ??

    Great pics, thanks.

I am alone in thinking that the added tailwheel spoils the appearance of the beautiful Comet ?

Somehow, it looks sleeker and more purposeful with the skid (obviously impractical though)

I totally agree, Galdri, it doesn’t have any Spitfire parts, but has Spiteful wings. That was what I was referring to.

I believe it was/is the last incarnation of the Spit series.

Just an opinion from here in ‘lil old NZ:)

Yet the Hunter has a mid-mounted tailplane and apparently has superlative flying characteristics.

[B]Well turbo_NZ, I’m not entirely sure the Attacker needed any ‘sorting’. The position of the tailsurfaces is completely different to the Me262 and the airflow was probably undisturbed in the tail down position.

Sorry, what I meant to say was sorted the design so as not to have the ‘262’s problem of blanked out elevator control.
