Just adding a little more about Richard Pearse.

Richard Pearse invented some novel features on his aircraft ,…like the variable pitch prop, steerable tricycle undercarriage, rear elevator, and wing flaps to name a few.

The engine he designed and built was truly remarkable though.
It was a horizontally opposed twin cylinder (like half a Cont 0-200).
But, it fired in both directions, effectively making it a 4 cylinder.

History is a bit vague on when he really (if it all) did fly.

Still, it’s good to have inventiveness back then. We wouldn’t have the technology today if we did have those early aviation pioneers, whether they be American, French British, or even NZers.

He is unable to fly anymore, but still manages the Warbirds over Wanaka displays and Alpine Fighter Collection.

I reckon they’re a very delicate looking aircraft, I guess accentuated by the 2-bladed prop and stalky looking undercart.

Yes, that Lanc that MOTAT have got was at one stage seriously close to breaking it’s back due to the extensive corrosion to the fuselage structure. It got saved in the nick of time.
Incidentally, it’s ex- French Navy. I think one of the main differences is the twin guns in the rear turret and not 4.

I remember seeing the P-47 when I was a boy. It had a big strut holding the wheels apart, it was (at that time) so bodgied together and poorly restored as a gate guardian.
But it was a Razorback (very rare) and it’s good to see its gone to a better home.

So, did Ford end up licence-building Merlins ?
