Thanks, and thanks for the tip Adam. I tried rabbit when I was in Malta (excellent aviation museum, by the way) a couple of years ago and it was rather nice, so any that don’t get completely flattened might just go in the back of the car!

Thanks guys and gals for your support. I expect to see you all there sometime this year – no excuses!

In all seriousness, I hope to help make major changes to the way the collections are looked after and really develop the museum. I’ve got a few ideas up my sleeve already. 😉

MOTF: Good point, well taken. Setter did make some very good points in that thread and I intend making sure that long term plans are drawn up and implemented. As a national museum, it is nothing less than our duty. It is already intended that a master plan for the MoF should be completed by the end of the year and this should hopefully address such issues. As regards the volunteers of the APSS, I’ve already been in touch with my contacts there and, I hope, building bridges.

Steve: I don’t yet know exactly what is happening, but I’ve heard strong rumours that work on the Beaufighter will be starting this year. If I have anything to do with it, that will certainly be the case. Whether it does or not, I’ll certainly get you access if you give me a shout nearer the time.

Congratulations Ian ! Now what would you think of an ex Bristows Wessex , British Airways HS.748 (Budgie) and Canadair Sabre being added to the collection!

Thanks guys. I really appreciated your comments. I’m particularly grateful for your vote of confidence Andy – going through the collections managament records for the large objects, I realise just how little I do know, but I’m working on it!

David: your comment is interesting, having just read in the last few days that a Sabre was on the museum’s acquisitions list. Personally, I’d love to see a Mossie in the collection, which would be a superb complement to the Beaufighter and Blenheim (OK then, Bolingbroke) all of which flew from East Fortune and many other aerodromes in Scotland.

And just so that you know where I’ll be, here’s a couple of wee shots of East Fortune, then and now.

    Alex,

I suspect you’ve probably seen this photo before, but just in case you’ve not, I thought I’d post it. It’s of PZ468 QM-D of 254 Squadron. It comes from this site on the Mosquito: http://www.vflintham.demon.co.uk/aircraft/mos/mosquito.htm and is, I note, included in J J Halley’s The Squadrons of the Royal Air Force & Commonwealth 1918-1988.

The Potteries Museum and Gallery has a XVI on display, details available from here: http://www.aeroflight.co.uk/mus/uk/n-r/potteriesmus.htm

As you can see, it is indeed currently under restoration.

East Fortune used to have one of the engines from the ‘110 on display – don’t think it was there earlier this year, though.

East Fortune does indeed still have this engine on display, in Hangar 1 (the military aviation hangar). You wouldn’t have seen it during the forum meet, because it is next to the Spitfire XVI, and I know what your attention would be focussed on!

Incidentally, I just found out this week the East Fortune has just acquired one of the tail fins of the Hess Bf 110, although as far as I know this is not on display (but I may be wrong!)

    Daz,

The aircraft impressed into RAF service would have been given an RAF serial. The style of the serial on this aircraft looks identical to those I’ve seen on wartime BOAC Mosquitoes, so I assume that this aircraft was with BOAC or some such commercial company. The fin flash would be for wartime identification purposes, ensuring it wasn’t shot down by friendly fire!

Having given it a bit more thought, and had another look at the photo, I think it may read Pauline Ma Wee Smasher. This would be a reference to what was either a wife or sweetheart and the fact that she was very good looking! The use of a Vargas girl would be more common than using a true likeness in such circumstances, I think.

What do the words say? I can’t make it out. Is it Hindi or something?

I don’t think so! It appears to read Pauline Me Wee Smasher. More like Scots than Hindi.

Perhaps it’s easier to judge with the two together, in monochrome:

Could it be from an earlier Hawker product – the Fury or Hart line? Would their props hang on the front of a Merlin? – Nermal

This photo of a Bulldog comes from the RAF Museum’s website. There does seem an uncanny resemblance …

I forget the exact figures, but wasn’t it something like £5,000 for a Spitfire? If only you could buy one for that price now!
