Exactly so. Isn’t a cultural problem? The Greeks, the Italians and to a lesser extent the Spanish and Portuguese are raised into a culture of avoiding tax at every opportunity. Added to which in Greece and Italy the degree of corruption at the highest levels of public and private life obscure the realities of life.

Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain! :rolleyes: I wondered what that acronym meant when I saw it the other day.

The problem is that we cannot afford ‘PIGS’ to all default and they almost certainly will if Greece is allowed to default.

But neither will the German electorate accept for much longer the inevitability of long term bail outs to prevent default. The only reason these huge sums are being spent is to protect the Euro and sooner or later it will simply become unsustainable.

Greece lied to gain access to the EU. And the rules were bent for other countries in order to enable expansion to meet the POLITICAL aspirations of the the federalists.

It is very difficult to avoid the debate being pro or anti EU because it is the EU and more specifically the Eurozone construct which is the root of the problem.

Greece is the tip of the ice-berg and the problems of the “PIGS” are not going to be solved soon.

Or you look at the other way and Germany and probably the Netherlands leave the Eurozone and work independently leaving the rest to flounder on with a hugely devalued Euro.

Or just forget the whole enterprise and pull the plug on the “federal EU” so beloved of the Brussels gravy train.

The decisions being debated have nothing to do with economics but everything to do with politics. Like everything else in Europe the Greek solution is being politically driven.

I have always missed the Horsemen, so I am naturally keen to see them but just two more P51s will be enough anyway.
